Editor’s Note: Lyons resident Nick Schneider is an astronomer at the University of Colorado specializing in planetary science. He had been invited to a conference in the field at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, from 8-11 March. The earthquake and tsunami struck Sendai on March 11, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Japan time.   

Some of you have asked for my account of events in Japan, and the rest of you are just going to get it. I wanted to write it down anyway so I didn’t forget any part. Remember though, that however alarming it was for me, my family, and my friends, there are undoubtedly hundreds of thousands of stories scarier still, and not all with happy endings.

LCF Expand 2011 Ralston Scholarships

The Lyons Community Foundation (LCF) has stepped up its support of our local high school graduates by increasing the funding to the LCF Scholarships in memory of Steve Ralston. Starting this year, the LCF will award two $1000 scholarships for study at any accredited post-secondary school. Any graduating senior from Lyons High School or a student who lives in the Lyons area and attends a neighboring school is eligible to apply as are home-schooled kids living in the Lyons area.
