Newton Thomas - September 17, 1860-July 13, 1940
Newt Thomas came to Lyons from Indiana. Thomas had a talent for painting and through the years could be seen in the vicinity of the town industriously at work on one of his canvasses. One of his favorite scenes was Steamboat Mountain and it was shown in many of his paintings. In 1922, he had an exhibition of his paintings at the Creamery (currently the vacant lot east of St.Vrain Market) where they processed milk, made butter, cheese and ice cream. In 1927 the Creamery closed and became a theater. Across the street, Thomas’ paintings can still be seen on the walls of what originally was the Frank Brothers Store (1891-1897) and is currently Lyons Fork. At the time of his death he had been a resident of Lyons for more than fifty years.
