Yes, another hot week gone by, but luckily a little rain. The cornfields are drying up, but they say there is a good wheat crop. What will the farmers do when they have to borrow money for seed, and then don’t have a crop? It is a dire situation. Let it rain!

Another hot week gone by, 100 degrees most every day “down in the valley.” People who have a thermometer in their cars notice the change in the temperature as they come into Lyons; it’s usually 5 to 10 degrees cooler. I have always heard Lyons was about 10 degrees cooler, and know that when you get to the Rte. 36/66 junction, you feel a welcomed breeze coming down the canyons. Monday night’s Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting felt at times like one had fallen through the looking glass. The agenda bounced from a bear cub and a moose on the loose, to repealing the ethics code for Town employees, to a plea by a citizen to be allowed to use LESS water during the drought, and finally to char-broiled squirrels. Who says these meetings aren’t entertaining?

A previous article highlighting the 2011 Central City Opera season appeared in the spring of 2011. This year, for the 2012 season, the operas include the Turn of the Screw, Oklahoma, and La Bohème. On Friday, July 13, my husband and I took the chance to see the last two afore mentioned productions in one day.

There are so many articles written, and so much talk today, about how a lot of folks in their 50s and 60s either won’t be able to retire before age 70 or may never be able to retire at all. Instead of rehashing this downer of a scenario,
I would like to discuss what a person or a couple needs to have today in order to retire before age 65.
I have consulted with many clients who had this simple question: Can I retire when I’m 60? I’ve even had a few people ask me if they are in good enough shape to retire at age 55. They simply had no idea if they had enough money invested and enough future income to cover all that they wanted to do in retirement.

Another hot week, and three hours with no electricity in the north end of town. Wow! We are spoiled by these modern conveniences. How did the old-timers get along? No fans, no air conditioning, no computers, no lights, no refrigerators, etc. Ah, this modern life does spoil us!Ask the Handy Woman!
Lately, I’ve been dealing with calls about garbage disposal issues so I thought that might be a good topic for the month. I don’t mean to offend the composting advocates in the crowd but disposals, or food grinders, are being installed in more and more of today’s modern kitchens.

A good weekend gone by and with rain! They say an inch of rain is worth a billion dollars, and I believe it. The TV said it will start to rain in Lyons, at 5:22 p.m., and it did! It came down fast and furious, cars were stopped, 1-25 was closed, etc., but it was worth it. Whee! That heat got to us! Sad to say, it came a month too late, and would have stopped the rash of wildfires
Water & Power Usage Skyrocket

The recent combination of extremely high temperatures and little or no rain has meant an increase in the usage of both water and power by Lyons residents, according to Town Administrator Victoria Simonsen. At Monday night’s Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting Simonsen explained to the Trustees that the Town has, in the last week, reached the daily cap levels
