Frances crawled out an upper window of her family’s Iowa farmhouse and onto the tin roof above the front porch; she was toting a tray of thinly sliced apples from the orchard. She placed them carefully on the tin roof to dry in the sun -- the roof was hot enough to keep the flies away. These apples would be the stars of the dried apple pudding, with whipped cream from the dairy cows, which was a staple of celebratory family dinners.About Town, August 9, 2012
Another week gone by! Next week school starts on August 16. Where did the summer go? Many folks went far away on vacation; others stayed home playing and attending ballgames, taking their kids to swimming lessons, camp, swimming in the old swimmin’ hole in Meadow Park, kayaking, tubing, fishing, biking and just playing. Can you believe it? A year has gone by. A whole year since Lora and Joseph at the Lyons Recorder agreed to let me blather on about what makes my world go ‘round: fixing things and playing with power tools! (Cue Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor sound byte. Actually no, don’t. That just sounds ridiculous.).

Hi All,
The good news is that we have received word that a grant from the State Historical Preservation Fund, to finish work on the museum, has been awarded to the Lyons Redstone Museum. The money from the grant will cover: pointing the sandstone with the rounded antique tool, painting the exterior panels on the upper story, and painting and renovating the fire escape. The total cost of the project is $71,197 (grant of $54,248, plus a cash match of $18,049).
