About Town, August 30, 2012

A VERY BUSY WEEK WENT BY AND WE ALL MADE IT!
A great day for Lyons to be on the USA Pro Challenge cycling race, which brought a lot of folks to town, and gave the Town a lot of good publicity! Great job Chamber members, Town staff, and all who helped! Special thanks to Chamber members Lee Hall, Laurie Kennedy, Lou Thackston and Kheli Mason. Those yellow shirts from St. Vrain Market hit the spot! I understand that Lyons’ Julian Kyer was one of the bikers.

Lantern-Lit Journey Through History

By Kathleen Spring

Each young camper held a lantern from the early 1900s and followed their guide through the mysteries of the Lyons Redstone Museum on the first day of the 2012 Lyons History Summer Day Camp. They first learned about how fire, then candles, lanterns, and finally electric lights changed the way of life of mankind. Then they went down the darkened hallways to discover how Lyons pioneer families lived their daily lives.

Part 2 – State Prospects For The Girls

By Renée Haip

The girls went into last year’s state meet ranked 4th, and after a tough race they finished 4th.  Lyons has taken a girls’ team to state twelve times in the program’s sixteen-year history, and at least one individual in those four non-team years.  In 2010, they brought home a first-ever trophy, of the runner-up silver variety.  This year, the Lady Lions are working for another, and aiming for gold. In Colorado Milesplit’s preseason

BOT Hears Bleak Report

By Joseph Lekarczyk
In the interest of full disclosure, let it be known that the author of this article is married to the Mayor.

The Board of Trustees (BOT) got an earful of bleak news about the State of Colorado’s fiscal sustainability from Wade Buchanan, President of the Bell Policy Center (an independent research/advocacy group based in Colorado). He gave a forty-five minute power point presentations with some sobering graphs and pie charts. In a nutshell, the demand for services (i.e. Medicaid, Education, Courts and Prisons, Transportation Infrastructure, etc.) that the state generally funds is going up, while revenues (taxes), because of TABOR and other measures that have been passed

Highway Of Legends

About 205 miles from Lyons, or a three and a half hour drive, you’ll find one of the first scenic highways of Colorado, the Highway of Legends. While on the way to Santa Fe, my husband and I passed many signs, which directed travelers to this eighty-two mile, two hour scenic side trip that begins in Walsenburg and ends in Trinidad. You take Rte. 160, west toward LaVeta where the Highway of Legends actually begins at Rte. 12.

Part 1 – State Prospects For The Boys

By Renée Haip

Last year, after running a well-executed state race, the boys’ cross-country team brought home a second place state trophy in a race where they were ranked a distant third to favorites Telluride and Crested Butte. In the school’s 16 years of the program, all under Coach Mark Roberts, the Lions have qualified for state all but once and brought home silver four times. This year, the team continues their quest for a first-ever state championship title and they have a lot of reason to be hopeful.

Dear Editor,
I, being a longtime school crusader (1948 to present), am on the St. Vrain Valley School District Over-Ride Committee to help pass a vote this November which will recoup the 14 to 16 million dollars in funds passed by the voters in 2008 but taken by the State of Colorado.

Mysteries Of Menopause Explained

Part One: What is going on?

With Dr. Sara Hart, ND, MSOM, LAc of Stillwater Healing Arts Clinic, Lyons

One moment you’re sitting in a meeting having a conversation with a colleague and you’re able to present yourself as a professional, intelligent person.  Before you can blink, your mind turns to Jell-O, you can’t remember the last word you said nor the poignant message you were trying to convey, your body temperature seems to be going through the roof, and you’re sweating profusely.
