About Town Nov. 1, 2012

Another beautiful week gone by! That snow was nice, and we needed the moisture. Coming from   the east, you can see that the mountains got quite a bit of snow, which is still there.  We will need a LOT OF SNOW TO CATCH UP!  Of course, we don’t want it to snow for Halloween or the Christmas Bazaar and parade, or for the football games, but otherwise we will welcome it!

EDC ednorses Ballot Issue 3-A

Dear Lyons Voters,
The Lyons Economic Development Commission endorses Ballot Issue 3-A, the Mill Override measure for the St. Vrain Valley School District.

EDC Commissioners don’t stand alone on this issue. We have joined a large group. Mayors of every town in the school district support this measure. So do a substantial number of business organizations, economic stakeholders, and community leaders throughout the school district.

A True Halloween House

A True Halloween House

By Jaiden Batts

Do you want to see the scariest house in Lyons? If so, come to 120 Ewald St. Miss Connie Burkhart (The Dinosaur Lady,) is a paleontologist and welder who welded all of her scary creatures. She started when she lived in Southern California near Hollywood. She was an actress in Hollywood, which made her interested in set design. She was inspired by the haunted mansion.  “I was 11 years old when I first started making headless people.” After her acting career she kept the idea.

Ask the Handy Woman!

Answers to your home maintenance and repair questions

By Kheli Mason, The Handy Woman LLC

Last month I wrote about the pros and cons of two types of hot water heaters. I was expecting that I might catch a little “heat” from proponents of one type or the other. What I did get was a wonderful email with yet another option that I thought would be good to share in this month’s column. Here is what Bud O’Connor had to add to the conversation:

E-Readers Now Available At Depot Library

For those who have been hesitant to purchase their own e-reader, the Lyons Depot Library is now offering two Nooks for checkout by the public. While many residents in our community have their own e-readers, others do not. These Nooks will help introduce technological possibilities to them. A $500 grant from The Library People has made possible this step into electronic media for our patrons.

Budgets And Pay Scales

By Joseph Lekarczyk

In the interest of full disclosure, let it be known that the author of this article is married to the Mayor.

After a lengthy pre-meeting workshop with Town Staff on the 2013 budget Monday night, the Board of Trustees (BOT) got off to a late start for their regularly scheduled meeting. Despite the delay, the Trustees and Staff were optimistic that they could wrap up the light agenda by 7:30 or 8 o’clock. However, with an agenda item concerning the compensation scale for Town of Lyons employees, it was not to be. Despite Mayor Julie Van Domelen’s best efforts to keep things moving along, no one was able to make it home in time to enjoy the exciting finish of the Bronco/Charger Monday Night Football game.
