About Town Nov. 8, 2012

THIS IS THE DAY!  A lovely day, to end all those political ads on TV and in the papers. It will be a welcome relief.  May the best men or women win!
I am mostly interested in the Mill Levy override 3A, and hope it passes for the welfare of our kids of the St.Vrain, the knowledge, the property values, the community, and all that good schools bring to us all.

Lyons Season Ends In Buena Vista

By Bob Blair

It was a clear, crisp night in Buena Vista last Friday (November 2). The Lions had fought long and hard all season to make the play-offs. Along the way for one of the smallest Lyons football teams ever, came a new coach who installed a new offense and a new defense. Not many outsiders gave the Lions a nod for success, but they kept fighting. A new play-off format for 1A football had voting decide the final play-off seeding rather than getting an automatic berth for finishing in second place in the conference. The results of that vote meant Lyons had to face a team, which had just dropped from 2A to 1A, and was ranked number one in Colorado in their class. None of this fazed the Lions on their long bus ride.

A Tale of Woe and Warning

Dear Editor,
We left Lyons for two weeks of travels one morning in early October. Upon our return, we immediately heard a faint sound of water running. Investigation revealed that the metal chain controlling the flapper-valve in our toilet was kinked, preventing the valve from closing and allowing the tank-fill water to constantly drain. Apparently, this mishap occurred on the last flush as

Chase The Music Garners Grant

Group Publishing of Loveland, Colorado, the same organization that recently recognized and awarded a grant to the Lyons Community Food Pantry for their outstanding contributions to the community, has also recognized and awarded another grant, this one a Cultural Arts Services award (for projects that increase appreciation of, and participation in the arts) to Chase the Music, a local non-profit corporation founded earlier this year by Lyons local Clark Hodge.

Boys Win XC State Title, Girls Take Second!

By Renée Haip

It was a crisp and chilly morning last Saturday (October 27) at the Colorado State Cross-Country Championships in Colorado Springs. After months of training for this moment, the Lions were ready to take on the challenge of the unforgiving and brutal 5K course of hills and creek crossings at Bear Creek Park and the adjacent rodeo grounds at the Norris-Penrose Event Center.

About Town Nov. 1, 2012

Another beautiful week gone by! That snow was nice, and we needed the moisture. Coming from   the east, you can see that the mountains got quite a bit of snow, which is still there.  We will need a LOT OF SNOW TO CATCH UP!  Of course, we don’t want it to snow for Halloween or the Christmas Bazaar and parade, or for the football games, but otherwise we will welcome it!

EDC ednorses Ballot Issue 3-A

Dear Lyons Voters,
The Lyons Economic Development Commission endorses Ballot Issue 3-A, the Mill Override measure for the St. Vrain Valley School District.

EDC Commissioners don’t stand alone on this issue. We have joined a large group. Mayors of every town in the school district support this measure. So do a substantial number of business organizations, economic stakeholders, and community leaders throughout the school district.

A True Halloween House

A True Halloween House

By Jaiden Batts

Do you want to see the scariest house in Lyons? If so, come to 120 Ewald St. Miss Connie Burkhart (The Dinosaur Lady,) is a paleontologist and welder who welded all of her scary creatures. She started when she lived in Southern California near Hollywood. She was an actress in Hollywood, which made her interested in set design. She was inspired by the haunted mansion.  “I was 11 years old when I first started making headless people.” After her acting career she kept the idea.

Ask the Handy Woman!

Answers to your home maintenance and repair questions

By Kheli Mason, The Handy Woman LLC

Last month I wrote about the pros and cons of two types of hot water heaters. I was expecting that I might catch a little “heat” from proponents of one type or the other. What I did get was a wonderful email with yet another option that I thought would be good to share in this month’s column. Here is what Bud O’Connor had to add to the conversation:
