What Grandma Ate... And Why

By Carol Marra

Frances crawled out an upper window of her family’s Iowa farmhouse and onto the tin roof above the front porch; she was toting a tray of thinly sliced apples from the orchard. She placed them carefully on the tin roof to dry in the sun -- the roof was hot enough to keep the flies away. These apples would be the stars of the dried apple pudding, with whipped cream from the dairy cows, which was a staple of celebratory family dinners.

Central City Opera

A previous article highlighting the 2011 Central City Opera season appeared in the spring of 2011. This year, for the 2012 season, the operas include the Turn of the Screw, Oklahoma, and La Bohème. On Friday, July 13, my husband and I took the chance to see the last two afore mentioned productions in one day.

Cabo San Lucas

My recent articles concentrated on local daytrips but I’d like to deviate this week and share the experience my husband and I experienced recently. A friend we met on several Dixieland Jazz cruises invited us to share a week in his four-bedroom timeshare in Cabo. We’ve all heard the warnings about visiting Mexico. So, I Googled the

Estes Park hosts a multitude of events throughout the summer, which encourage spending a day in the town, or perhaps even several days. You can find the town’s event calendar at www.estesparkcvb.com/calendar.cfm. Then just click on a particular date for more information on that day’s activities. Here are a few highlights for summer visits.

For the next daytrip suggestion, I’ll concentrate on historic Georgetown. A long time ago when my husband and I were dating, we’d go skiing then stop on the downhill drive from Eisenhower Tunnel in Georgetown for dinner. By the time we ate a bite, the heavy traffic had cleared away and it was smooth driving into Denver.

Entertaining The Kids In Metro Denver

The unseasonably warm weather this March fooled Coloradoans into thinking spring is actually here. However, I’ve experienced Colorado snowstorms in May. My Texas brother swears it snowed one Fourth of July when he visited Denver and we attended a fireworks show. I remember it was cold; my pictures prove that I loaned his wife a heavy coat.

Finding Fossils Close to Home

I moved to Colorado from Texas right out of college when I was hired to teach in Jefferson County. I stood awestruck at the sight of Red Rocks Amphitheater from the playground of Bear Creek Elementary. Amazed, I listened to my second graders talk about collecting arrowheads at nearby Soda Lakes. Our favorite unit included dinosaurs and a field trip to the Natural History Museum in Denver. That was a long time ago.
