The Core

Keeping Lyons Fit!  By Mary Chase

Spring Break is just around the corner, which means revealing your abdominal muscles that have probably been well hidden over the winter months. Toned abdominal muscles are a multi million dollar business in our society. So why can’t just a couple of more crunches everyday solve your problems? Let’s explore why.

Crunches don’t target the entire abdominal area. They focus on the middle of the abdominal wall, but neglect the obliques and much of the crucial back strength.  Additionally, your lower abdominals or rectus abdominus is often hard to isolate during a traditional crunch.  So essentially the crunch is only doing half of the work that your core needs.

Memphis, Elvis, And Graceland

Memphis, Elvis, And Graceland

Roads Traveled with Linda L. Osmundson

My high school years were filled with Elvis Presley; his music and movies. I loved the candid pictures of his naturally radiant smile rather than the sexy serious looks of promotional shots. Fans looked up to him because of his generosity to those less fortunate, or the gifts he gave to unsuspecting individuals. Once his Las Vegas days and concerts in later years included news of substance abuse, women, and more explicit gyrations, some fans dropped away, including me. Still, I grieved upon hearing of his early death. So the only place I

Alarming Situation

The St. Vrain Pharmacy fell victim to a would be burglar last Wednesday night (March 13). The perpetrator jimmied the back door of the establishment, and then tried in vain to silence and disable the alarm with a hammer. The unsuccessful attempts and the screeching alarm apparently frightened away the rascal before he could do any further damage, or carry off any ill-gotten loot.

Surprisingly, the break-in attempt occurred relatively early, at approximately 9:30 p.m. A Boulder County Sheriff’s Deputy, who was in the area on a routine patrol of the Lyons

State Champs To Defend Titles

By Renée Haip

The Lyons Track and Field teams, boys and girls, have dominated the state 2A scene for the previous two seasons (2011 and 2012). This year they are once again back as defending champions. While inclement weather was responsible for the cancelation of their first meet (RE-1J District), and basketball playoffs delayed the season and onset of practice for many athletes, the 2013 track and field season finally opened with the Lyons Relays on March 14.

As the Lyons Relays is an unconventional meet with the entire meet being scored in a relay format, it is always fun to watch and a terrific team building activity. With seven teams in attendance, the Lyons girls took top honors by impressively placing first in 9 of 16 events. The boys placed second behind Erie by winning 5 of 16 events despite the absence of

Tackling A Rental Car’s Secrets

Roads Traveled With Linda L. Osmundson

The snow predicted for last week’s Tuesday afternoon arrived early in the morning. Our drive to DIA on mostly wet, slick roads from Fort Collins took longer than expected. Once there, our noon flight was delayed because heavily overcast skies and runway conditions caused diversion of our incoming plane to Colorado Springs. We were in no hurry. Even with a delay, our 6:30 dinner reservations in Santa Rosa, California, seemed makeable. We finally left Denver about an hour and a half late. No problem – yet.
