“Crapfest” A Lyons Tradition
LaVern M. Johnson Park
What cyclists would not appreciate quenching their thirst with this stylish metal “Cyclist Cup?” In 1897, one year after the first modern Olympic Games, and six years before the first Tour de France was staged, John Lines of Waterbury Connecticut patented the “Collapsible Cup.” The design made it convenient to collapse the telescopic cup, snap on the cover, place the small box in a pocket, then continue the ride keeping the cup dirt-free. Visit the Redstone Museum at 340 High Street to see this treasure and a facsimile of the patent document. The museum is open daily, Monday through Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.
