Black bears, coyotes, and…camels? In Colorado? You bet! Only a mere 50 miles east from Lyons you can find not only camels but African lions, tigers, wolves, and more exotic carnivores at the Wild Animal
Sanctuary located in Keensburg, Colorado. This wildlife refuge is America’s premier sanctuary for large carnivores. Their mission is to save and rehabilitate all cast off large carnivores, as these are the species that face euthanization more than any other exotic animal due to the high cost of feeding and extreme danger in caring for these animals. The Keensburg center does take in a few small carnivores and non-carnivores, but they prefer to focus mainly on the large meat eaters as they are the ones hardest hit within the Captive Wildlife Crisis. And they need help! This is where you and the Student Activists: Kids Who Care come in. It is time to get wild and donate to the Wild Animal Sanctuary!
From February 7 through February 25 collection boxes and coin jars will be set up in specified locations around the Lyons area. Everyone is invited to donate items such as dry dog food (high quality), dry cat food (high quality), paper towels, paper plates, bottled water, blankets, laundry detergent, and Clorox and drop them off in any of the collection BOXES around town. As some locations will only have collection JARS, these are the places to drop off your extra change or make a financial donation as you swing by. Please refer to the list in the side box and note which locations will provide collection boxes and which locations will provide collection jars.
After February 25 the Student Activists: “Kids Who Care” will collect all donations, financial and wish list items, and personally take them to the Keensburg Wild Animal Sanctuary. There they will be able to participate in the educational programs the facility provides. By allowing visitors, especially young people, the refuge hopes to impart “that these majestic animals are not pet … that they are not products… and that they are not entertainment. They are some of the most magnificent creatures on Earth, and for that, they deserve our respect.”- Wild Animal Sanctuary. For those who wish to learn more, please visit their website at www.wildanimalsanctuary.org or speak with any of the Student Activists: “Kids Who Cares” as well as their leaders. So come on, GO WILD!
