How do you kick off a football season and say good-bye to summer? In Lyons, you throw a barbeque, and invite the entire community. It’s what the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office has been doing for 15 years, and this year it will be on Friday, September 10. The food line starts at 4 p.m., and runs until the game kicks off at 7 p.m.

Volunteers and Sheriff’s Deputies will spend their Friday afternoon cooking 2,000 meals of brats, hot dogs, and burgers. Throw in some chips, soft drinks, beans, potato salad, and maybe some corn on the cob, add a little live music, a bouncy castle or two, and maybe a cheerleader selling ice cream, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a wing-ding! All that, for the price of a normal ticket to the game (adults $5, students K-12 $4, senior citizens over 60 free). The proceeds go to support the Lyons High School athletic programs.

After the meal and the music, wander over to John “Jet” Johnson Field to cheer on the defending North Metro Conference Champions, your Lyons Lions, as they take on the Estes Park Bobcats in the “Battle of the Canyon.” This should be the start of an exciting year of Lyons football.
