With school barely under way, the Lyons Middle School Student Activists, Kids Who Care, are on the move. They have already set their first meeting date for Wednesday, September 14, to brainstorm their great ideas for the coming year. The meeting will be held after school from 3 to 4:15 p.m., in Mrs. Busby’s room (the art room), for all Middle
School students who are interested in participating. After a tremendously successful previous year, the bar is set pretty high, but the Activists feel confident they will be able to equal, if not top, their prior accomplishments. With such achievements as raising $1137 and 400 lbs. of food for the Community Food Share with their “Come Together Dinner;” raising another $1108 for 150 Health Kits for Haiti; making blankets and hats for kids facing chemotherapy; and a very successful “Coat, Hat, Scarf & Mitten Drive,” among their many previous worthwhile activities, this will be no easy feat! But the students are up to the task.
All those involved, have remarked on the fantastic leadership opportunity this group has been for students and for the people throughout the community who have participated and been called to action to serve and help others. It has been a chance for everyone in the community to become connected; from students, to local entrepreneurs, to seniors citizens. This year promises to be better than ever with new teacher/advisor Mrs. Busby, as well as returning advisors Veronika Gaia, Gail Hoag, and Robin Young with all of their superb enthusiasm. Moral of the story? Join the Student Activists: Kids Who Care!
