The Lyons Track and Field teams, boys and girls, have dominated the state 2A scene for the previous two seasons (2011 and 2012). This year they are once again back as defending champions. While inclement weather was responsible for the cancelation of their first meet (RE-1J District), and basketball playoffs delayed the season and onset of practice for many athletes, the 2013 track and field season finally opened with the Lyons Relays on March 14.
As the Lyons Relays is an unconventional meet with the entire meet being scored in a relay format, it is always fun to watch and a terrific team building activity. Colorado State Senator Rollie Heath (D - Boulder and vicinity) and State Representative Jonathan Singer (D - Longmont and vicinity) were in Lyons last week (Wednesday, February 27) to hold a “Town Hall” meeting at The Stone Cup. Kids Kayak Club
The Town of Lyons Department of Parks & Recreation would like to invite Lyons youth, ages seven to sixteen, to join them at the Centennial Pool (on the corner of Alpine and Mountain View) to learn the basics of kayaking. The purpose of these classes is to prepare young kayakers for opportunities to participate in upcoming summer kayaking programs and learn basic kayaking skills in a comfortable environment. Fourteen classes will be offered on Fridays, starting January 18.

Last year, after running a well-executed state race, the boys’ cross-country team brought home a second place state trophy in a race where they were ranked a distant third to favorites Telluride and Crested Butte. In the school’s 16 years of the program, all under Coach Mark Roberts, the Lions have qualified for state all but once and brought home silver four times. This year, the team continues their quest for a first-ever state championship title and they have a lot of reason to be hopeful.

On Thursday, May 10, Lyons Track and Field traveled east to Eaton where they participated in the Patriot League meet, their final meet before the state championships. The sole 2A representative in a field of larger, competitive 3A schools, the Lyons Lions had a terrific day with many personal and season best performances.

The Lyons Recorder has purchased 2 sets of 4 tickets as prizes in our "Summer Fun Photo Contest". W.C. Fields said "Never perform (compete) with children or dogs'". Our winners prove the axiom.
