On Thursday, January 19, Lyons High School wrestling coach Chip Sullivan could only bring seven wrestlers to the dual meet against Estes Park. There are 14 weight classes, and Sullivan realized with so few competitors, a team win was not likely. None-the-less, the seven grapplers who showed were well prepared.
From lightest in pounds to heaviest the action follows:
106 lbs. – Lyons’ Cameron Grossnickle pinned Estes Park’s Logan Ashe in the 3rd period. Leading on points 12 to 6, Grossnickle reached behind Ashe’s knee and head pulled them together and cradled Ashe on his back for the pin.
120 lbs. – Lyons’ Masino Gonzales pinned Jamie Steadman in 56 seconds using a half nelson with an arm bar.
132 lbs. – Lyons’ Patrick Darenberg was pinned by Estes Park’s Austin Holmes in 1 minute and 9 seconds.
138 lbs. – Lyons’ Billy Housley was pinned by Sal Castango in the 2nd period. Castango used a reversal cradle to end the match.
145 lbs. – Lyons’ team captain Kelten Tschanz faced Cole Woodward of Estes in a seesaw match. Tshcanz scored points on an escape, two reversals and a near pin. However, Woodward scored points on takedowns, predicaments and near pins to win with the final score 18-7.
160 lbs. – Lyons’ Tom Nichols pinned Tom Donnely in 41 seconds after first locking up with an overhook and underhook and then flipping Donnely with a monster pancake onto his back.
Super Heavyweight – Lyons’ David Plute won on forfeit because Estes Park had no one to face him.
However, Plute’s inaction at Estes Park didn’t adversely affect him at the Northglen Invitational on Saturday, January 21; Plute wrestled often and well. After a loss in his first match of the Invitational moved Plute into the consolation bracket, the grappler went on a tear. His subsequent winning streak brought him ultimately to the top, with Plute winning the bracket championship.
The wrestling team’s next action is Thursday, January 26. Lyons High School will host four dual matches. Using two mats, the first round will consist of matches Lyons vs. Mead and Estes Park vs. Strassburg. In the second round, the matches will be Lyons vs. Strassburg, and Estes Park vs. Mead.
Also on the schedule for the Lyons wrestlers is a return to the high country for the Estes Park Thin Air Invitational, which will be held Saturday, January 28. The earliest round starts at 9 a.m. With seventeen teams participating in the tournament, it is likely to last into the late afternoon.
