On Saturday, September 4, the Lyons Varsity Volleyball team competed against a field of five other 2A schools at the Alexander Dawson Tournament. This was a great opportunity for the Lady Lions to fine-tune their game prior to the start of league play.

Lyons won the first match against Front Range Christian 3 games to 1 (25-18, 25-20, 19-25, and 25-21). Versatile senior Corbette Tschanz contributed to the victory by playing both middle blocker/hitter and setter roles. She tallied 2 kills, 6 assists, 10 serves and an impressive 5 blocks. Outside hitter Rachel Hinker, senior contributed significant fire-power with 12 kills, 10 serves, 5 digs, and 3 blocks. Junior Jesse Montross, the quarterback of the offense, also had a stellar performance, dishing 33 assists, 4 kills, 15 serves, 5 digs and 2 blocks.
The second match had a similar outcome to the first with LHS on top, 3 games to 1, to win first in pool (25-14, 14-25, 25-18, and 25-12). Colorado Springs School made a valiant effort, but key performances by senior Molly Arp and sophomore Rebecca Weglarz led to their defeat. Middle blocker Molly Arp had 8 kills without an error, 6 serves- 4 of them aces, and 4 blocks. Serving and defensive specialist Rebecca Weglarz served 5 serves, 3 of them aces. Senior Ashlynn Overly also contributed key defensive digs in the Lions efforts.
After winning pool, the Lady Lions advanced to the final match for first place against Peak to Peak, a strong team. The first game the Pumas crushed LHS 25-17. The ladies fought back to win games two and three (25-16, 25-18). Game four was all Peak to Peak and they took the momentum into the 5th and deciding game. Down 11-3, the lions fought back, refusing to giveup. They tied the game at 13 all, both teams working hard until finally losing 14-16. Senior libero Kylee Senesac, anchor of the defense, recorded 18 digs, 15 serves with 5 aces. She also passed well under the pressure of the final game. Sophomore Nola Basey, an outside hitter, also played well with 13 kills, 7 serves, 12 digs, and 2 blocks. Freshman Madeline Keen, middle and opposite hitter/blocker showed poise contributing 4 kills, 14 serves- 4 of them aces, and 3 digs in the match.
Head coach Jeff Klipstein reflected on the tournament: “This Peak to Peak game ended a wonderful tournament for us. It was the first three matches of the season and we had some ups and down. Peak to Peak played a great championship game, and I’m glad we could use our experience to help us tie the fifth game at 14-14. I think this tournament has given us a lot of growth opportunities and I look forward to moving forward the rest of the season.”
The LHS volleyball team travels to Strasburg to play on Tuesday, Sept. 7, and Resurrection Christian on Thursday, Sept. 9.
