Co-Ed Softball Season Peters Out

After a grueling 10 game season, which included two sets of scheduled games in the final week to make up for rainouts, the 2010 Co-Ed Adult Softball season just sort of petered out last Tuesday evening (August 31).  In fact, the last two games of the season were forfeits, because three out of the four teams couldn’t field enough players to start the games.

The six o’clock contest, however, was a spirited match between the never say die Farmers of Stonebridge, and McHeaters who got hot over the last half of the season. The two teams traded scores every inning, and each time the McHeaters crew thought they had planted the final seeds for a victory over the Farmers, those pesky sod-busters came back with a few runs of their own. As time was running out, the score stood at 10 to 9 in favor of McHeaters. Although it wasn’t necessary, they added four more runs in their final at bat of the season, and added four more scores for good measure, making the final score seem more lopsided than it was. Stonebridge Farm ended its inaugural season with a 4 and 6 record, not bad for a group that had to borrow their opponents’ gloves at the beginning of the season. McHeaters, also in their first year, finished in the upper echelon of the league, with a 7 and 3.

The second game of the evening was a real doozey. It pitted the Bull Snakes against the Bombers, both with identical 8 and 1 records. The winner of this game would lock up second place overall, and might tie for first if the Oskar Blues Brew Crew could somehow pull off the upset of the season by knocking off the Natural Disasters in the final game of the evening. The game lived up to the hype; one avid fan in the stands was heard to say, “This is the game I would pay to see!” The snakes struck first, scoring one run in their first at bat. Both teams showed some slick fielding in the second, sending their opponents down 1-2-3, with some brilliant defensive plays. The Bombers scratched out a run in the third to tie the game, only to see the Snakes answer in kind. The Bombers dropped a couple on the Snakes in the fourth inning to go up three to two, only to have the Snakes knot it at three all in their next at bat. It was at that point the Bombers lived up to their name, scoring four in the fifth, and three in the sixth, all the while holding their rivals scoreless. The final outcome was an 11 to 3 that left the Snakes with an 8 and 2 record, while the Bombers at 9 and 1, could only hope the hurricane that has been the Natural Disasters would get downgraded to a tropical depression.
The third game was a contest to see who could forfeit first, Oskar Blues Brewery (Longmont) or Lyons Community Montessori. Since neither team could field 10 players to start the game, the umpire declared a “mutual forfeit,” and both teams lost. How that works in the final standings is anybody’s guess. The Brewers lost to the Teachers, but the Teacher’s lost to the Brewers, so it was either a lose/lose situation, or a win/win situation depending on your perspective and whom you asked. I’m just going to say the Brewers ended the season “kinda flat” and the Teachers get an “incomplete.”

In the final game of the night and season, the other Oskars team, the Waiters, (from Lyons) would have played the Natural Disasters. But the OB team apparently got an “evacuation order” and nobody showed up. Much to the chagrin of the Bombers, who waited around hoping for a miracle, the umpire was left with no choice but to issue the Disasters a forfeit win allowing them to end the season with a perfect 10 and 0 record, and the crown of Champion of the 2010 season.  Their opponents ended the season with a 1 and 9 record. The Hooligans, who finished their season the night before, ended with a respectable 6 and 4 record, the Chamber Rockers finished at 2 and 8, and the Lyons Fire District also finished the year perfectly at 0 and 10. Well done to all. See you next year.
