The Lyons Softball Team started their season with a pair of wins Saturday at Lakewood’s Addenbrooke Park against Denver Lutheran and Gunnison High

School.  Stellar pitching and defense, and a few big hits, helped the Lions get off to a perfect start.  Jaicy Sutak and Kelly Williams each threw complete games, giving up a total of 1 run on 7 hits and only 3 walks.  The Lions committed only one error per game, outhit their opponents 15-7, and outscored them 11-1.

Game 1
The Lyons’ Lady Lions won the battle of the “L”s, besting the Lutheran Lights 3-1, thanks to great pitching and timely hitting.  Sutak, in her first pitching appearance since hip surgery a year ago, scattered 5 hits and 2 walks over 7 innings, allowing the Lights’ only run in the first inning.  Jaicy claims that the surgeon left a screw in her femur, but those who have seen her play suspect that bionics were involved.  Sutak would be the first to admit, however, that she didn’t win the game all by herself.  Every ground ball to the infield was handled with ease by second baseman Rachel Bashor, shortstop Kayce Johnson, and third baseman Baylee Subbert, with three notable laser beam throws fired by Subbert.
The Lions threatened to score in the third inning when Sutak walked with two outs and Maddie Aumiller advanced her to third on the season’s first base hit, but they didn’t end up scoring until the top of the sixth.  Madison Myers led off with a single, promptly stole second, and then advanced to third on Baylee Subbert’s groundout to the first baseman.  Then Katy Hickey launched a triple over the centerfielder’s head to get the Lions on the board.  Kelly Williams followed with a triple of her own, also to dead center.  Then Hayley Theriault knocked in Williams with a well-placed Texas Leaguer to the left side, and the Lions took a 3-1 lead.  They squelched a scoring threat in the bottom of the sixth and then turned off the Lights with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Game 2
Kelly Williams took a no-hitter into the sixth inning when a Gunnison batter finally connected, sending a missile over right fielder Brittany King.  But that triple and a seeing-eye single in the seventh were the only hits the Cowgals could manage  Williams walked one batter and fanned five in her brilliant complete game shutout.  She induced a lot of ground balls that were smothered by the Lyons infield of Subbert at third, Sutak at shortstop, Dana Arling at second, and Rachel Bashor at first.

The Lyons batters kept chipping away at the Gunnison pitching, starting the scoring in the second when Bashor hit a double on the left field line and later scored on a wild throw.  In the third, Maddy Wallace scored on a single by Maddie Aumiller.  In the fourth, Sutak scored when Subbert pounded a triple over the right fielder and Subbert later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Aumiller.  In the sixth, Madison Myers led off with a single and then scored on Subbert’s double.  Sutak knocked in Hayley Theriault and Kayce Johnson with a sharply-hit single in the seventh and later scored on a single from Myers.
Coach Kyle Schuyler  was pleased  with his team’s performance, stating that the girls were “rearing to go after two weeks of hard work at practice.  It was nice to get a test with that first game being so close, and the girls really rose to the challenge.”  He commented that the Lions’ dual focus so far has been defense and conditioning, and the day’s performance reflected the hard work they’ve done.  Schuyler is looking forward to the next challenge, and will turn his team’s focus to their first home game this Saturday against Peak to Peak.
