The Lyons High School softball team had a rough game against Brush at home last week (Tuesday, September 20).  The Brush pitcher faced the minimum number of batters through six innings, as the only three Lyons base runners in that stretch got either picked-off or doubled-up.  Meanwhile, Brush scored three runs in the top of the first and two more in the top of the fifth.

Lyons staged a little rally in the bottom of the seventh when Sammi Bashor led off by reaching first on a throwing error from the Brush shortstop.  Sammi’s speed and her hard slide at second forced another error on Madison Myers’ grounder to the second baseman.  Both runners advanced on a passed ball, but Sammi rounded third a little too far and the Brush catcher hung her up with a snap throw to the third baseman.  Bashor sprinted for home and the third baseman fired the ball back to the catcher, who brought the tag down hard on Sammi’s face as she tried to slide under it.  Bashor popped up from the cloud of dust while her helmet lay spinning in the dirt, and zigzagged her way to the dugout - visibly woozy, but also undoubtedly tough.  The blow to the head puts Bashor on mandatory concussion watch until Monday.

Madison Myers, who had advanced to third on the throw to the plate, scored on Dakotah Chartier’s bloop double to right.  Brittany King followed with a dying quail single also to right, and Lyons had runners at first and third with one out. Unfortunately, the rally ended right there as the next two batters couldn’t get the ball out of the infield and Brush walked away with a 5-1 victory.

Trips to Gilcrest haven’t been much fun for the past few years.  The Valley Vikings Softball team is brutally good, as demonstrated by the 17-0 drubbing they inflicted on Lyons Thursday (September 22).  The two-time defending state champion Vikings pounded out 15 hits in their three offensive innings, while Lyons managed only three singles.  Madison Myers was 1 for 2 and Dakotah Chartier was 2 for 2, and that’s about it.  Lyons committed 4 errors and the Vikings were flawless in the field.  The loss evened Lyons’ record at 6 – 6, and they retooled for their match up against the upstart Mead Mavericks.

Rachel Bashor out-pitched Mead’s Paulina Quintana Saturday (September 24), and the Lyons batters out-hit the Mead Mavericks, but way too many errors did in the Lions.  Nine Lyons miscues led to nine unearned runs and Lyons went down 9 to 11.  The game was always within reach for Lyons, but they just couldn’t finish it off.

Mead jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead in the first, but Lyons fought back with a run in the top of the second on a Chandler Subbert single and a two-out rbi double by Hayley Theriault.  Things were looking up for the Lions when they shut down the Mavericks 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second and then used their speed to score three in the top of the third.  Dana Arling led off the inning with a walk, followed by a bunt single from Madison Myers.  Maddy Wallace knocked them both in with a hard liner to right, and she then scored on a throwing error by the Mead catcher.  The Lyons lead dissolved in the bottom of the third when the Mead pitcher hit one over the fence and then a series of errors led to another run.

Lyons went down in order, in the top of the fourth, and then the wheels fell off the Lyons defense in the bottom of the inning.  With bases loaded and no outs, two runs scored on a wild pitch and a wild throw back.  Another run scored on a ground ball and a subsequent high throw to the plate.  The fourth and fifth runs of the inning occurred on a line drive double and a bad hop on a grounder to the shortstop.

Down by five, Lyons was far from giving up.  The first two batters in the top of the fifth walked and advanced to second and third on a passed ball.  After a strikeout for the first out, Maddy Wallace laid down a perfect bunt that the Mead third baseman turned into a perfect play, faking a throw to first and then catching Madison Myers in a rundown that ended in Myers getting tagged out at the plate.  With two outs, Chandler Subbert delivered the clutch-hit of the game; a three-run jack over the left field wall.

Lyons scored again in the sixth to narrow Mead’s lead at 10-9.  Madison Myers hit a popup that nicked the Mead catcher in fair territory before spinning towards the Mead dugout, allowing the speedy Myers to get to second.  Then Brittany King hit a dribbler to the pitcher that ended up rolling down the right field line when Quintana threw it in the dirt.  Unfortunately, that was as close as that the Lions got to winning the game, as Mead tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth and then held Lyons scoreless in the top of the seventh.
