Kids Kayak Club
The Town of Lyons Department of Parks & Recreation would like to invite Lyons youth, ages seven to sixteen, to join them at the Centennial Pool (on the corner of Alpine and Mountain View) to learn the basics of kayaking. The purpose of these classes is to prepare young kayakers for opportunities to participate in upcoming summer kayaking programs and learn basic kayaking skills in a comfortable environment. Fourteen classes will be offered on Fridays, starting January 18.
Beginner classes will be held from 7 to 8:45 p.m., at the Centennial Pool. Students are encouraged to spend the first hour of class learning and the remaining time practicing on their own for the duration of pool time (7 to 8:45 p.m.). Instructional courses will be limited in size to ensure the student/instructor ratio remains reasonable. There is a $120 fee for students who pre-register, and a required waiver through Lyons Parks & Rec. Adults/non-students may also participate; the drop-in rate is $10 per session.
Participants must be skilled swimmers, and parents must provide transportation to and from the pool. Parks & Rec. has a limited amount of equipment it will lease students for the duration of the pool sessions. Please contact Marissa Davis at (303) 823-5082 for more details.
Attention Local Artists
Parks & Rec. is reaching out to local artists to take part in a contest to create this year’s Lyons River Run 5K Race logo. The River Run 5K will take place on Sunday, June 28, 2013. The contest is open to all age groups. Judging will take place during the third week of February (entry deadline is Friday February 15, by 4 p.m.). The winner and winning logo will be announced in the March 7 issue of the Lyons Recorder. The winner will receive a $250 grand prize in exchange for the logo. All contestants must submit both a hard and soft copy of their work. For official guidelines, please visit the Town of Lyons website: www.townoflyons.com.
The ice skating rink in Meadow Park is now open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The rink is completely weather dependent, which means on days when the temperature is above freezing, the top layer of ice cannot be resurfaced, and the rink will be closed for maintenance. Skate rentals are available at Town Hall Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note, Town Hall will be closed Monday, January 21, in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Parks & Rec. does have a few older models of ice skates for sale. If you are interested, please stop by the office for pricing and availability. Pleas be aware of the skill level and of others while skating, and as always, skate at your own risk!
