Lyons Cross Country at Nike Cross Southwest Regional

By Renée Haip

The journey of an endurance runner does not begin at day one of official practice each season, but rather is a continuum spanning years.  The dedicated distance crew of Lyons High School trains for all but four weeks of the year; they take a two-week break after each cross-country and track season.  Though the official season ended with the state meet, five Lyons’ athletes accompanied by Coaches Boelé and Roberts

Lyons Season Ends In Buena Vista

By Bob Blair

It was a clear, crisp night in Buena Vista last Friday (November 2). The Lions had fought long and hard all season to make the play-offs. Along the way for one of the smallest Lyons football teams ever, came a new coach who installed a new offense and a new defense. Not many outsiders gave the Lions a nod for success, but they kept fighting. A new play-off format for 1A football had voting decide the final play-off seeding rather than getting an automatic berth for finishing in second place in the conference. The results of that vote meant Lyons had to face a team, which had just dropped from 2A to 1A, and was ranked number one in Colorado in their class. None of this fazed the Lions on their long bus ride.

Boys Win XC State Title, Girls Take Second!

By Renée Haip

It was a crisp and chilly morning last Saturday (October 27) at the Colorado State Cross-Country Championships in Colorado Springs. After months of training for this moment, the Lions were ready to take on the challenge of the unforgiving and brutal 5K course of hills and creek crossings at Bear Creek Park and the adjacent rodeo grounds at the Norris-Penrose Event Center.

Lyons Cross Country Teams Advance to State Championship Meet

By Renée Haip

The Lions made yet another big statement with a strong appearance at the 2A Region 1 Cross Country meet in Lyons last Thursday, October 18. The home course was stunning in its autumn colors, the air was cool, and the Lions were on a mission to qualify their teams for state. Their aim was to do this without expending more energy than necessary, leaving more in their tanks for the state meet. With Lyons being the heavy favorites for both the girls and boys’ team titles, the coaches had plenty of leeway to play with race strategies, and even race rosters on the boys’ side.

Lyons Runs Over Jefferson

By Bob Blair

It was Senior Night at John “Jet” Johnson Field last Friday (October 19) honoring the senior football players, cheerleaders (Captain Erin Kurland and Melissa Jansen) and their parents during their final home game of their high school careers. With parents watching their sons,  (some of whom  have been playing football since they were seven or eight years old), step onto the home field for one final home game, emotions have a way of taking over, and bringing those

Team Effort in Lady Lions Win against Strasburg

By Kari Basey

After 15 matches, the Lady Lions are just above the 500 mark with 8 wins.  The first match from last week was against a tough Bulldog squad.  Lyons fought very hard in the match, barely losing the first two sets by a score of 23-25.  The third set Lyons played well and won 25-17.  The fourth set was probably one the Lady

Lions Run Over Panthers

By Bob Blair

The Lyons High School Lions varsity football came out last Friday night, and had their way with an undermanned, overpowered Nederland Panthers team. Lyons won the coin toss, elected to receive, and that was just about the ball game. After a good kick return, running back Justin Boldt took a hand off on the first play
