The Lyons football team traveled to Ault on Friday (September 23) night to take on the Highland Huskies, in what turned out to be a long and painful night for Highland. Lyons kicker Forrest Donnell booted the opening kick off through the end zone and the Huskies had to start on the own 20-yard line. The stout Lions defens
e totally shut down the offense. The Huskies were forced to punt the ball, and the Lions offense started to roll. The Lyons offense, led by quarterback Jordon Melani, drove down the field to the Huskies 35-yard line. From there Melani tossed a perfect pass to Anthony Triffet for a thirty-yard gain. One play later, the Lions punched it in for the score, and Donnell’s extra point put the Lions up 7-0. And so it went for the rest of the half; Donnell’s kicks would put the Huskies in the hole, the Lyons defense would stifle the Highland offense, and they would be forced to punt.
On the next drive, Melani took the ball and up the middle on a QB-keeper, then bounced it to the outside and skittered down the sideline, breaking tackle after tackle on his way to the end zone. The extra point made it 14 to zip. Again the Lions stuffed the Huskies to get the ball back. Faced with a third down and fifteen deep in their own territory, Melani went back to the air, rifling a 30-yard pass to Triffet to get the Lions out of the hole. It only took the Lions three plays to roll 40 yards and score again. The rout was on!
Up twenty-one to nothing at the half, the second half was pretty much a carbon copy of the first. Early in the fourth quarter, with the game well in hand, Kyle Dick intercepted a pass and it was time for the JV squad to come in and get some game experience. The evening was marked by a great overall team effort. Triffet rushed six times for 43 yards, Melani ran six times for 41. Jayse Long had seven rushes for 35 yards, while Logan Watson had one run of 28 yards, and Erik Blair and Tullef Rudlong each chipped in for 21 yards. Melani and Triffet also hooked up through the air three times for 82 yards. In the end, the Lyons Lions had a very enjoyable bus ride home, with a 54-0 drubbing of the Huskies. The Lions JV team hosted the Huskies on Monday night and the score, though not quite as impressive, still came out to a 26-14 Lions’ victory.
Lyons now boasts a 3-1 record, and will host an undefeated (4-0) Resurrection Christian team this Friday (September 30) at home. Game time is 7 p.m., with the tailgate party and meal at 5:30. This game will also be the Lyons Lions homecoming game, so come out support the kids and have a great time.
