The Mead Stampede began with a mile and three quarter middle school race. Despite the hot, dusty conditions, the team ran well. As with every race so far this season, Lyons’ top runners, Paul Roberts and Joel Such, clinched the top two positions of the boys’ race (71 runners) with ease. Roberts, who is recovering from an injury, ran this

race as a workout and as a pacer, helping Such to his first place finish with a time of 9:59, which was a new course record, breaking the old standard by a whopping 48 seconds.  Roberts came across the line in a time of 10:02 for second place. Brian Dillon ran strong for 15th (11:45), while Ethan Burton* placed 27th (12:31), Jack Avirett* 37th (13:07), Nathan Schneider* 44th (13:28), Jack Davis 46th (13:33), Jack Gilson 51th (14:15), Adam Crowl 56th (14:45), Nathan King 59th (15:01), Connor Weadley* 62th (15:53), Braedon Mora* 63th (15:56), Nathan Radich 65th (16:31), and Alex Wright 66th (18:57).

In the middle school girls’ race (31 runners), the Lions put on a good showing with nearly all finishing in the top half of the race.  CeAnn Udovich was the first Lion to cross the finish line in 4th place, with a time of 12:46. Following were nice performances by Sarah Roberts 9th (13:39), Brandy Boldt 11th (13:51), and Amanda Dillon 13th (14:00).  Having been sick all race day, but determined not to let Coach Jeff Boele down, Sierra Tanner valiantly finished the race for 31st (22:52).

The high school team used the Mead Stampede as a workout, and preview to the course, which will be used for the Patriot League meet on October 8.  Both the boys and girls’ teams ran in their respective JV race at threshold pace, which was immediately followed with a 1600-meter time trial on the track. The top five finishers in the girls’ time trial were Miriam Roberts (6:04), Olivia Raspotnik (6:22), Kelsey Miner (6:40), Jenna Anderson (6:59), and Anna Sundrud (7:03).

With Coach Kevin Akers pacing the front-runners for the boys, the top three runners finished with only seconds separating them; Sam Crowley (5:09), Ryan Boucher (5:12), and Marcel Such (5:13).  Finishing 4th and 5th respectively were Ethan Pomeroy (5:52) and Spencer Huff (5:55).  Notably missing from the top five was Sean Flynn, who sat out due to an injury.

The Lyons Cross Country runners (high school and middle school) will next race at the Patriot League meet on Saturday, October 8.  Temperatures are expected to cool and provide nice racing conditions and some nice drops in times.

*These individuals ran a faster per mile pace than previously with Weadley clocking the biggest improvement of a minute per mile faster.
