On Friday (September 23) the Lyons’ Cross Country team competed in the Broomfield Invitational. The Lyons girls’ and boys’ teams both contended with hot
running conditions and a spate of recent illnesses amongst team members, which effected overall times for many. In the varsity girls’ race of 117 runners, Miriam Roberts was the first Lion to finish placing 13th with a time of 21:32. Olivia Raspotnik placed 53rd (23:24) with Kelsey Miner close behind for 57th (23:39). Finishing out the scoring were Jenna Anderson 75th (24:40) and Anna Sundrud 87th (25:54). Other finishers were Hazel Myers 88th (26:09), Faith Myers 94th (26:38) - a personal record (PR) by 46 seconds, Maia Lang 95th (26:41), and Emma Cisar 96th (26:49). The girls placed ninth out of eleven as a team.
In the boys’ varsity race of 136 runners, Marcel Such was the first Lion to finish with 18:06 (PR by 7 seconds) for 9th place, with Sean Flynn* not far behind with 18:17 for 12th place. Ryan Boucher and Reed Test stormed to the finish together with Boucher* placing 33rd (18:56) and Test placing 35th (18:57). Closing out the scoring was Sam Crowley* placing 49th (19:26). Freshman Brian Flynn finished in 62nd with an excellent personal race and time of 19:46, a PR by 31 seconds; as did fellow freshman Matt Dillon 85th (20:29), a PR by 27 seconds, and senior Ethan Pomeroy 100th (20:56), a PR by 28 seconds. Spencer Huff (118) 23:01, one of those who was affected by recent illness, obviously struggled through the race. The boys’ varsity team placed 5th out of 16 schools.
In the JV boy’s race of 179 runners, finishers for Lyons were Nick McNulty* 36th (21:49), Eddy Baisley 52nd (22:33), a PR by 4 seconds, Isaac Vahlenkamp 130th (26:00), Isaiah Vahlenkamp* 132nd (26:06), Jack Gambrell 163rd (28:41), Matt Smith 172nd (30:50), and Kevin Mattes 174th (32:44).
*These individuals set a new season best at this meet.
