The frustration of playing a 3A schedule is over. It’s all 2A from here on out, and Lyons is making the most of it.After three convincing post-season victories, Lyons is the new Colorado District 4 Champion. They defeated three Christian schools (Heritage, Dayspring, and Resurrection) by a combined score of 43-12, out-hitting them 35-13.
The District opener was held at Lyons against Heritage Christian. Lyons broke out their lucky grey post-season jerseys, and the Lyons seniors gave their (hopefully laundered) blue jerseys to their mothers to wear to the game. Using an all-senior lineup, the boys made their Moms proud by pounding out 13 hits and scoring 15 runs in the first four innings. Jesse Fisher homered early and added two more hits while Roland Valadez drove in three runs with three singles. Haden Fesenmeyer roped a double and a single, and Taylor Keen nailed a two-run double. Alex Scanlon homered in the fourth inning, and Keith Albertson kept his hitting streak alive in that same inning by blasting a double to the fence in left field. Seniors Dugan Tomczak and Zach Brodie also contributed hits and knocked in runs.
Fisher and Keen pitched two innings apiece, allowing only three hits and one earned run. Tomczak closed out the game by throwing a perfect inning, proving that a 30mph knuckleball can be just as confounding as a 90mph fastball, if you can just heave it somewhere near the plate.

Taylor Keen calmly took the ball in the middle of the diamond and went to work on Dayspring Christian while his Dad paced nervously. Taylor pitched the whole game, allowing only three hits while striking out 6 batters, and his Dad went the whole game without ever sitting down or standing in one place for more than 90 seconds.
Haden Fesenmeyer got Lyons on the board in the top of the second with a no-doubter drive that landed about 30 feet beyond the left field fence, but Dayspring surged ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the inning. After two walks and a hit batter, a poor throw to first on a double play attempt allowed two runs to score. Then a dropped fly ball and another walk loaded the bases, and the first hit of the inning drove in two more runs.
Coach Kyle Schuyler gathered his players and let them know that the errors just had to stop: a message that they seemed to take to heart. In the third inning, catcher Zach Brodie nailed a would-be base stealer when his throw to second beat the runner by a good three steps. A couple batters later, Roland Valadez showed great range at second base, lunging for a hard-hit grounder in making the third out of the inning. From that point on, Lyons played perfect defense while Dayspring’s defense fell apart. Ten Dayspring errors, coupled with some timely hits by the Lions, shifted the score in Lyons’ favor and it kept going up from there. Lyons eventually won the game 13-4, ending with a double play in the bottom of the seventh, Valadez to Albertson to Fesenmeyer.
The team suffered one casualty in the third inning, when left fielder Kyle Dick collided with shortstop Keith Albertson on a pop fly. Keith stayed in the game with a sore shoulder and knee. Kyle was helped off the field with an aching head and a sore neck, and he sat out the next game.

Having clinched a spot in next weekend’s regional tournament, Coach Schuyler told the boys to have some fun in the district championship against Resurrection Christian: another message that they took to heart. Freshman first baseman Heath Fesenmeyer led off with a triple to the right field fence, and he scored on a blistering double by Jesse Fisher, who punched out three base hits in each of the three playoff games. For the second game in a row, Haden Fesenmeyer drilled one over the left field fence, and Lyons took a 3-0 lead. Again, but this time in the bottom of the first, they let their opponents back into the game by committing a couple errors, and soon the score was tied at 3. The Lyons bats stayed active and they piled on four more runs in the second, followed by two in the third and a back-breaking 6-spot in the fourth.
Taylor Keen, still not nervous and showing no signs of tiring, pitched into the fourth inning before handing the ball to Jesse Fisher, who closed it out.
The Lyons defense was far from perfect, racking up 6 errors in the game, but their bats more than made up for it as they out-hit the Cougars 12-7 and won the game 15-7. It bears noting that Lyons had lost to Resurrection Christian 13-3 on this same field back on March 10th. This time it really counted, though, and Lyons got to proudly take home the plaque that says “District Champion.”

Keith Albertson hit a double in each playoff game, which would be an outstanding accomplishment for any player, but it’s just another week for Keith as he now has 19 doubles in 19 games and has hit safely in every game he played this season. Now sporting an 11-11 record, Lyons as a team, is batting .304 with 59 doubles, four triples, and 17 home runs. Brodie, Albertson, Haden Fesenmeyer, and Fisher are all batting above .400 and have a combined 95 runs batted in.
As District 4 Champions, Lyons plays against District 3’s second seed Byers at 12:30 p.m. on May 14 at Denver’s All-City Field. The winner plays the winner of the Resurrection Christian vs. Limon game for a berth in the state’s final four tournament the following weekend.
This is Lyons’ first Regional appearance since 1995. These boys are good.
