Well, spring break was pretty fun. The first Lyons baseball game after spring break: not so much. A long bus ride to Strasburg Tuesday afternoon led to a mercy-rule shortened game and a really long bus ride back home to Lyons. All the Lyons offense occurred in the top of the fourth, when Zach Brodie and Jesse Fisher both singled and were knockedin by yet another Keith Albertson double. Other than that, it was all Strasburg, as they outhit the Lions 13-3 and outscored them 12-2.

Lyons was once again outhit Thursday when they hosted the Alexander Dawson Mustangs, but a pair of solo homers powered the Lions to their first win since March 19th. Each team scored once in the first inning, with the Lyons run coming on Keith Albertson’s twelfth double of the season. Taylor Keen knocked in Grayson Gibson in the second inning on a hard liner to right. The Mustangs tied the game at 2 in the top of the third before shortstop Hayden Fesenmeyer lifted the lions back on top with his solo home run in the bottom of the inning. Alexander Dawson again tied the score in the top of the fourth and Lyons again pulled ahead on a solo home run, this time off the bat of pitcher Kyle Dick. Dawson scored twice in the top of the fifth, thanks to three singles and a passed ball, and they took a 5-4 lead. Lyons finally tired of all the back-and-forth scoring, and put up their first crooked number of the evening, a 3-spot in the bottom of the sixth. Grayson Gibson led off the inning with a single to left. Then Kyle Dick and Alec Porche walked to load the bases. Luke Crawford walked, forcing in a run, and Zach Brodie singled in two more. Taylor Keen, pitching in relief, struck out the side in the top of the seventh, and Lyons prevailed 7-5.

The Lyons bats became progressively more productive through the week, and they belted out 9 hits on Saturday against the Platte Valley Broncos. Unfortunately, the Broncos pounded 17 hits and took advantage of 5 Lyons errors as they cruised to a 15-8 victory.
Lyons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Zach Brodie crossed the plate on an Alex Scanlon grounder that the third baseman couldn’t handle. Lyons had runners in scoring position in each of the next three innings, but they failed to score. Meanwhile, Platte Valley scored 5 in the third on three hits, two errors, two walks, and a wild pitch. They scored two more in the fourth on two hits and two errors. The Broncos led off with a triple in the top of the fifth, and scored on a single by the next batter, to take an 8-1 lead.
Lyons answered with a 6-run barrage in the bottom of the fifth, to pull within one run. That inning featured doubles by Haden Fesenmeyer and Zach Brodie, and a three-run dinger by Freshman Logan Watson.
In the top of the sixth, the wheels fell off for the Lions. The first Bronco batter bounced one over the fence, but the umpires incorrectly ruled it a home run, and the floodgates opened up. Six hits later, the Broncos were up 15-7. Lyons scored once more in the bottom of the seventh on another Zach Brodie double, but it was too little too late, and they fell 8-15, for their second league loss of the week.

Keith Albertson’s magnificent 8-game doubles streak is now over, but his 9-game hitting streak is still intact. Lyons is now 4-6 overall, and 0-2 in Patriot League play. They host Weld Central Tuesday, then travel to Brush Thursday, and play at home on Saturday against Highland. All remaining games are against Patriot League opponents.
