After a disappointing first game at Resurrection Christian in Loveland Thursday, where Lyons fell 3-13, the Lions hoped to give their home fans an opener to remember on Saturday. Smoke from the Left Hand Canyon fire chased the players to Sandstone Park in Longmont, and the fans who followed them there were not disappointed.
Jesse Fisher, who just last weekend was wearing Air Jordans in the Regional Basketball tournament, dusted off his cleats and pitched a great game into the fifth inning, allowing just four hits and one run while fanning eight. After an unearned run scored (on a popup that drifted away from the shortstop in the gusty wind) with two outs in the fifth, Fisher was relieved by another basketball player, Taylor Keen. Keen retired all seven batters that he faced, and Lyons came away with a sweet 4-2 victory.
The Lyons hitters were very efficient, stringing together their first five hits in the fourth inning, to score three runs. Zach Brodie led off that inning with a line-drive single over the shortstop, and Jesse Fisher followed by scorching a liner up the middle. Then Keith Albertson pounded a double down the left field line to score Brodie. Hayden Fesenmeyer knocked in Dugan Tomczak (courtesy-running for Fisher) with a single up the middle and Albertson tried to score from second, but a perfect throw nailed him at the plate. Fesenmeyer advanced to second on the throw. After a popup to the first baseman, Kyle Dick came through with a two-out single to right, scoring Fesenmeyer.
Albertson led off the sixth with a single just out of reach of the diving second baseman, and then advanced on a wild pitch. Then Fesenmeyer knocked in the fourth Lyons run with a line shot to center field.
Lyons out-hit their opponents 8-4, and played nearly perfect defense. Coach Kyle Schuyler was pleased that they “came back strong after the loss on Thursday. They played mistake-free ball and did what they had to do, to get the win.”
