On Saturday, July 9, the Lyons Juniors traveled to Longmont to face the Nationals on Affolter Field. They prevailed by a score of 14 - 5. The win clinched the regular season lead. Lyons still has one game to play but all other teams have 3 losses or more compared to Lyons' 9 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie.
In the 1st inning Lyons scored 4 on a home run by Preston Stansel and hits by Evan Reeves and Nick Eaton. The defense held the Nationals scoreless based on a double play and a strikeout by starter Reeves.
In the 2nd inning, Lyons was held scoreless. Reeves struck out 1 and induced a ground ball to start the defensive side of the inning. The Nationals scored on a walk and astute base running. With runners on second and third, Reeves delivered a strike out to end the threat.
Lyons bats got hot in the 3rd inning, Hits by Reeves, Eaton, Stansel and Joe McCain produced 5 runs. Stansel pitched giving up 2 runs and striking out 2.
Lyons resumed the attack in the 4th inning. Hits by Jack Gilson, Eaton, David Brett and Stansel produced 4 runs. The Nationals' scored 2 in their final at bat. McCain pitched well, striking out 1 and inducing ground balls that let the the defense cut down runners at home plate and second base.
