Unfair And Inaccurate Criticism

Dear Lyons Community,
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about whether or not to support a new library facility for Lyons, but I was disappointed to recently read unfair and inaccurate criticism leveled at the Library Steering Committee.

Creating a 21st century multi-media library in Lyons has long been a community goal. In 2008, the Economic Development Council prioritized a better library as one of its key economic development strategies based on empirical evidence of the links between a good library and downtown economic

What LSC was designed to do

Dear Editor:
Next week, the County Commissions will vote on whether to form a new library district in the greater Lyons area.  If the district is formed, the existence of the Library Steering Committee (LSC), which has lead the effort to create a new library/resource center in Lyons, will end.  With this (hopeful) transition in mind, let’s take a moment to consider what the LSC has accomplished.

Let’s begin with what the LSC was designed to do, and not do.  Composed entirely of volunteers, but with no budget or bank account, the LSC’s purpose was to gather community input, study possible sites, determine costs and library features, and get a library district formed.  The new

I have some grievances

Dear Lyons Community,
I have some grievances with the proposed Library District and Library Steering Committee.

A number of years ago when I was on the Town Board I expressed my skepticism about spending $80,000 for a comprehensive Town management plan because

I wasn’t sure it would be used.  But we did create a plan, and the plan was to a significant degree based upon survey results.  Let me share with you some of those survey results.

First in the Lyons Comprehensive Plan Survey on Page 4 the people were asked to, “Please rate Lyons as a community on each of the items listed below.  63.6% of the respondents rated the Quality of the library: very good, good or adequate.

Boulder/Larimer County Commissioners To Meet With Lyons-Area Residents

By Mark Browning

Two heads are supposed to be better than one, but is the same thing true for County Commissions? Lyons area residents will have the chance to see for themselves on Thursday, August 29, when the Boulder and Larimer County Commissions will hold a rare joint public hearing at Lyons Town Hall. The hearing is set for 5 p.m., with a short tour by the Commissioners of the current Depot Library (likely to occur just prior to the hearing).

The idea for a combined public hearing arose at prior separate Commission meetings concerning the Lyons Library Project Steering Committee’s requests to establish a new regional library district, and approve a tax mill levy ballot measure to fund the district.  The Commissioners themselves

Sustainability Needs You!

Sustainability means a lot of different things to different people, which is why when creating the Lyons Environmental Sustainability Action Plan we want your input.

The Town Of Lyons, through Hygiene based Natural Capitalism Solutions, will be conducting stakeholder interviews and a community wide survey during the months of August and September to gauge citizen and business views on the local sustainability issues facing the Town.

Your input will then be used to help guide the creation of the Lyons Environmental Sustainability Action Plan, which is scheduled to be completed at the end of

Lyons Appreciates Their Firefighters

A large crowd of Lyons area residents where on hand at Oskar Blues last Saturday afternoon to show their appreciation and say thank you to the Lyons Fire Protection District volunteers and crew for all they do to protect us. The event was the kick-off of a statewide series of “Fight Fire with Beer, BBQ, and Music” celebrations. Lyons Mayor Julie Van Domelen was on hand to introduce and thank Fire Chief J.J. Hoffman, while everyone enjoyed some delicious brats, pulled pork, green bean casserole, and cold slaw supplied by Oskars. The local
