When people hear reports of mountain lion sightings, they naturally assume the incident must have been in the backcountry. Recent reports of mountain lion activity in populated areas, however, reinforce the fact that mountain lions can be present just about anywhere in Colorado – including cities and towns.
Over the past few weeks, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officers responded to reports along the southern Front Range involving mountain lions killing deer near people’s homes. In order to better serve the community, the monthly distribution hours for the Allenspark Community Cupboard have been changed. The next distribution will take place this Thursday, March 21, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at The Old Gallery, 14863 Highway 7, next to the Allenspark fire Station One. For those who are not able to pick up on that day and time, The Old Gallery is also open on weekends, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Folks can also request delivery by calling (303) 747-2089. Volunteers are always needed, as are donations of non-perishable foods and personal items like: shampoo, soap, toothpaste, laundry detergent, etc. Please call the number above for more information.

The GearSPOT (138 East Main Street) in the Lyons Village Central Plaza is celebrating their grand opening/ribbon cutting on Friday, March 22, from 3 to 6 p.m. Proprietor Lisa Ruoff invites the community to come on in, check out the outdoor sporting gear, and enjoy some munchies and refreshment.
Ruoff, who moved here from Carbondale late last year, had spent most of her adult life owning and operating restaurants in the Roaring Fork Valley. The St. Vrain Pharmacy fell victim to a would be burglar last Wednesday night (March 13). The perpetrator jimmied the back door of the establishment, and then tried in vain to silence and disable the alarm with a hammer. The unsuccessful attempts and the screeching alarm apparently frightened away the rascal before he could do any further damage, or carry off any ill-gotten loot.

Based on continued feedback from the community, the Lyons Board of Trustees identified exploration of a possible swimming pool among its priorities for its two-year term. This is not meant to raise expectations about actually being able to build a community swimming pool, but rather to initiate the background work necessary to ask the questions of whether a pool might be possible, what type of pool, how could it be funded, and where it might be placed.
