This  Monday, March 1,  the Lyons Parks & Recreation Department will hold an organizational meeting, and they are looking for a few “champions;” to help organize and run events for the Good Old Days celebration. Last month, nearly a dozen enthusiastic citizens came to the Parks & Recreation Commission (PRC) meeting to provide input about events they would like to see incorporated or expanded at the annual celebration in June. A summary of these suggestions include:

  • - A family oriented community picnic featuring classic “old-time” picnic games (i.e. egg race, potato sack relays, three legged race, wheelbarrow race, etc.), kid oriented games, water games (balloon fights, water guns, tubing races, etc.), kickball tournament, or an adults vs. kids softball game.
  • - Good Old Days Talent Show
  • - Sandstone Art Fair in Sandstone Park
  • - A family “Pet Parade” or other themed parade
  • - An art/craft booth for kids
  • - Dunk tank
  • - Video Game Tournament (i.e. Guitar Hero or other type games) on a large screen TV
  • - A Teen Oriented Dance or “Battle of the Bands”
  • - Main Street Sidewalk Sale

With this direction from the community, Parks & Recreation Department now needs champions to adopt one, or all of these ideas. These champions will create a plan for their event, organize it, and help secure volunteers. While the Parks Department and the PRC stand ready to assist with the planning and provide advice, these champions will be the “project leaders” for their event. As in all small towns, volunteers are absolutely essential to create, enhance, and revitalize special events such as Good Old Days.

If you or your organization, team, club, neighborhood, friends, etc., are interested in planning one of the events, please attend this meeting, or contact Dave or Marissa at (303) 823-8250 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Your active vision, energy, and commitment are needed to evolve Good Old Days into a special event that meets the needs and desires of the community.
