Prior to the parade (3 to 5 p.m.) at the Odd Fellows Hall, there will be pumpkin carving and mask making for children, ages 5 to 14. The pumpkins are free while the supply lasts, donated by Coco Gordon and the Lyons Community Garden. Create your own scary or goofy mask before the parade and costume contest. All materials for mask making will be supplied, and both these events are open to all area children (adult supervision required).
Bongo the Balloon Man, a popular longtime fixture on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, will also be entertaining before, during, and after the parade on Main Street. Bongo creates unique balloon sculptures that capture the imagination, and he is sure to have something “spooktacular” in mind for Halloween.
After the parade (7 to 10 p.m.), there will be an Old-Time Square Dance and costume contest at the Odd Fellows Hall. The event is free (donations will be accepted to benefit the 2010/2011 Old-Time Dance Series) and open to the public. Prior square dance experience is not necessary! Live music provided by “Poultry In Motion,” calling by Chris Kermiet. All dances will be taught, and kids are welcome. This is a “snack potluck” event. Come and enjoy a dance or two after the parade and trick-or-treating. The costume contest will be judged by the band, prizes for adult and child winners.
Also scheduled for Saturday, October 30, are two fundraising events. The third annual “Chili Cook-off” sponsored by the Lyons Garden Club, will again take place at The Stone Cup. The cook-off will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Judging will be at 4:30 p.m. First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded. Bowls of chili will be for sale at $5 per bowl, $2.50 per half bowl, and 25¢ for a taste. Application forms to enter your chili will be available at the Cup, and in The Lyons Recorder. Applications, along with a $10 entry fee can be mailed to P.O. Box 154, Lyons, CO 80540. For more information please call Sue Wratten at 823.2435. All proceeds from the cook-off contest will go towards the Garden Club’s continued efforts to beautify Lyons.
If your tastes go more along the lines of spaghetti, rather than chili, or if you just want to help out another great cause, stop by the Lyons Fire District Station House for a benefit spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m., that same evening. Tickets for the dinner are: Adults $6 at the door, $5 in advance; Children $4 at the door, $3 in advance. Advance tickets can be purchased any day, up until October 25, at the Fire House, or from a Fire District member. Salad and dessert are included with the meal, as is an “indoor trick-or-treat, after you eat.” All proceeds will go to the Fire Fighters Association.
Did you know that the Walt Self Senior Center acts as a resident building, a senior building, and a community building? The facility was built by the Boulder County Housing Authority, and is managed by the Town of Lyons with the Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Events directly managing the scheduling and facility management.
In order to be eligible to use the facility, users must fall under one of three priorities for usage. Those priorities are:
1st priority: Residents of the Walt Self Senior Apartments.
2nd priority: Organizations/Individuals who assist residents of the Walt Self Senior Apartments or older adults who reside in the town of Lyons. This also applies to individuals or organizations that provide educational, entertainment, or group activities that serve the seniors in Lyons.
3rd priority: Compatible groups and organizations.
Questions concerning the use of the facility or the above priorities should be directed to the Lyons Department of Parks and Recreation. Accommodations for most groups can be achieved.
The Walt Self Senior Center currently provides space for the Lyons Golden Gang, GAP, LAACA, Boulder County Aging Services, the Art Salon, and various other senior services and programs. The Lyons Parks & Rec. Department is interested in developing more classes, activities, and events that appeal to the seniors in the Lyons area. If you have an idea for something you would like to see offered, please call 823.8250 or email
