rescheduled (because of rain) first annual Lyons Luau Concert will close out the Sandstone Summer Concert Series.
Nancy Thorwardson and Patrick Cullie are two ukulele geeks from Lyons. She, a noted songwriter and performer, plays resophonic uke, and sings like nobody’s business. He, plays lead baritone uke, concert uke, guitar, and doesn’t sing like anybody’s business. They are joined by Bret Billings, who plays steel guitar and harmonica, while Dave Ball rounds out the sound on upright bass. Lively and fun, their repertoire includes original compositions, swing standards, hapa haole tunes from Hawaii, and some surprises along the way.
Gadzukes!’s first CD, New & Used, has gotten rave reviews! Dan Willging, in Dirty Linen Magazine, calls the recording a “wonderfully sunny assortment.” Rick Huff of Best of the West Reviews recommends that you, “Sit back, start listening and loving it! You absolutely will.” Coupe Studios says of New & Used, they are “One of the most unique and enjoyable music projects we’ve worked on this year.”
This should truly be one of the most unique and enjoyable concerts of the summer. So to paraphrase Neil Diamond (a huge Gadzukes! fan by the way), “Pack up the babies, grab the old ladies, and everyone go to the Gadzukes! show,” and don’t forget your grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts. Blankets, camp chairs, and a picnic dinner (perhaps a roasted pig and a pineapple upside down cake) should round out the evening quite nicely. As always, the music is free, compliments of the Lyons Parks & Recreation Department. Thorwardson says, “Anyone who can’t get in free, will automatically be added to the guest list.”
