According Boulder County Coroner Emma Hall and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder resident Michel Van Duym, age forty-six, was stuck and killed while riding his bike through Lyons last Saturday evening (May 11) at approximately 5:11 p.m.
Van Duym was traveling east on Route 36 (East Main Street) when he was involved in a head on collision with Lyons resident Pat Ward at the intersection of Second Avenue. Ward was traveling west on Rte. 36, and at the time of the accident was in the wrong lane. As a result of the head on collision, the victim was thrown off his bike and suffered severe injuries. Despite the efforts of the volunteer firemen and EMTs, who were only a block away at the fire station, Van Duym was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ward was arrested and charged with multiple offenses including DUI per se (any amount at or above .08 blood alcohol level), vehicular homicide, and careless driving resulting in a death.
