As a result of public demand, the Lyons Depot Library is completing the transition from the current library cards and paper card catalog system to a fully electronic system. This improvement was identified as a top priority by library patrons in a user survey.
The new system will allow card holding library patrons to access over 609,000 items available on the electronic card catalog (including e-books and audio book downloads) through a central library catalog system containing
holdings from 33 libraries. These materials will be available from other libraries through inter-library loan. This improvement will also streamline checkout procedures for staff and patrons.
While the new system is being installed, the library will be closed Monday through Wednesday, April 8, 9, 10, to barcode all holdings and install new equipment. Later in April, all patrons wishing to check out materials will have to complete a new registration form to receive new library cards. During this transition there will be a “grace period” so that patrons who have not yet received new library cards will be able to use their old ones. After the grace period has passed, only the new cards can be used to check out materials.
New library cards should be available shortly after April 15. To avoid long lines at the library, registration opportunities will be set up at several public events in April, and at other public locations during that time. The library requests and suggests that all patrons take advantage of these registration opportunities during April. Getting your library card early will avoid the hassle of having to apply for one when you want to check out materials after the transition is complete and the off-site registration opportunities have ended.
This project was completed with financial support from the Lyons Community Foundation and the Town of Lyons. The additional materials that will soon be available online through the Lyons Depot Library can be previewed at the following web site: www.aspencat.info/cgi-bin/koha/opac-main.pl.
