The best little church in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah is right here in Lyons! Each year at an annual gathering of the Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church (which is made of up of over 400 churches in the inter-mountain west) one church, that fits the category of small church, is chosen to be awarded the “Small Church of the Year.” Earlier this summer the winner was announced, and it turned out to be the Lyons Community Church.
The criteria for the award are based on the impact the church has in the community, and the growth in its faith based programs. The judges felt that LCC’s work with both the Lyons Community Foundation and the Lyons Community Basic Needs and Emergency Fund (of which the ongoing food pantry is part) were programs that put the congregation over the top for this well deserved recognition.
Pastor Claire McNulty-Drewes was very pleased and proud of her congregation’s efforts, and added that with the down turned economy, the needs of many in the community are greater than ever. She says there is always a need for donations, particularly dry cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, tuna, peanut butter, jams and jellies, honey, dry pasta and sauce, coffee, pancake mix and syrup. Spanish speaking volunteers are also always an asset.
