The Oskar Blues Brewery Outdoor Games gets underway this Friday afternoon with registration beginning in Sandstone Park at 2 p.m., and the prelims for the pro free- style
kayak event in Meadow Park at 4 p.m. Back in Sandstone, the beer tent opens at 5 p.m., and the Yellow Design bike demonstration starts at 6 p.m. The annual BBQ dinner also starts at 6 p.m., with the music on the Vasquez Stage, featuring Tyler Grant and Grant Farm, getting underway a 7 p.m. And that’s just the first day!
On Saturday morning, beginning at 10 p.m., the spectator friendly events will include: the down river race (from the Apple Valley Bridge to Meadow Park), a basic playboat/freestyle clinic, the Adam Barron Memorial creek race (on the South St. Vrain), kayak events (open freestyle and “not so” pro freestyle), dog competitions (speed retrieve and the always a crowd favorite K-9 cannonball), a paddle board demo (try it out!), basic river running and fly fishing clinics, a 5K bash and dash run, a cruiser bike fun ride, more music (this time with Monkeys on Guitars) and of course the beer tent and a party at Oskars.
Sunday starts with the volunteer river clean up and breakfast, and then it’s more kayaking events in Meadow Park (cadet, junior, pro freestyle and slalom race), bike events (instructional clinics, pump track races, and the dirt bike skills competition – aerials!) in Bohn Park. There will also be more fly-fishing clinics, more music (Bonnie and the Clydes.
See the insert in this week’s paper for a complete listing of events, locations and times. But basically, the events will be going on all day. The kayak events are in Meadow Park for the most part. The bike events will be in Bohn Park. The music and beer tent in Sandstone Park. The K-9 events will be at the ponds near McConnell Bridge, and the 5K will start in Sandstone Park. There will be a silent auction with great items to bid on going on all weekend at the registration tent. The weather should be great (don’t forget your sun screen) and the river should be high! Whoopee!
