With the addition of the completely fenced 10-acre dog park and the growing population in Lyons of humans with their canine friends, there became a need for the dogs to have a voice! The Lyons dog park, plus the whole dog community of Lyons now have their own Facebook page.
Yes, even the dogs (with the help of their human companions) are learning to puppy bow, wag their tails, scratch, and sniff around Facebook. The page is designed to allow people that “LIKE” this page to share pictures, information regarding the dog community, join with “doggie volunteer efforts,” and upload pictures to this page. Some of the information you will find on this page is expressed below but can also be found on the “discussion tabs” on the page. We are hoping for true interaction among the dog population here in Lyons.
Congratulations go out to the Lyons Parks and Recreation Department which has been very busy over the last year providing major improvements to the dog park. Some of the improvements made include: the fence that surrounds the dog park, a new shelter for shade, water for our thirsty pups, trees to add shade, and the mowing of the park to keep down the tall grass in areas. Over the past year, the enjoyment by the locals and their pups has been growing steadily. Visitors to Lyons are also now finding out what a great dog-friendly community Lyons has become by finding Lyons on various internet canine websites. It is truly wonderful to have a place to go with your pups to walk, play, train, and socialize. This has been a huge undertaking by Parks and Rec. and again, we thank them for caring about our canine community.
A large part of the budget to maintain our canine community comes from the dog licensing fees. With each yearly license that is purchased, 50% of that fee goes directly to the dogs. Containers made of PVC piping have also been added to the poop bag dispensers around the parks so that now Lyons can recycle their plastic bags for poop disposal. Even the dogs are going green. So, don’t forget to clean out your closets and stock up the PVC dispensers to help keep Lyons poop free.
Within the last month, in addition to the Facebook page, a “dog committee” has been working with Parks and Rec. on ideas and positive ways that we, as a community, can work with the Town to continue to develop Lyons as a dog-friendly community. There have been great ideas developed and both the Town Staff and the Board of Trustees have been very receptive to a “PAWSITIVE” approach to making our pups compliment life in the town of Lyons that we all enjoy so much. Some new smells that are arising are: early-paw discounts for dog licensing before May 2011, additional pvc poop bag dispensers around town for more accessibility, and a program to allow people to donate a memorial tree to the dog park in honor of a canine friend and loyal companion.
To celebrate and support our dog community, there will be a party at the Lyons dog park on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Be sure to scratch this date on your calendar. This party is for you and your dogs to have fun, learn, socialize, and enjoy our great dog community. On April 16, prior to the party, we would love to have volunteers throughout the town do their part to pick up a bag of poop. Let’s get the poop out of Lyons and be green with the cleanup effort. This party is still being planned, so be sure to keep your ears tuned to the Facebook page or articles in the Lyons Recorder for future updates. If you would like to volunteer or have your kids volunteer, please email Kat Drake at
. Stay tuned for happy barking, howling, puppy bows and a ton of tail wags!
