Congratulations to everyone who picked up their FREE RTD ECO Pass. Lyons has successfully implemented one of the first community-wide bus passes in the nation. We
are setting the foundation for other community wide bus pass programs to occur, something we can be proud of.The current RTD routes to and from Lyons (the “Y” bus) run at peak commuter hours on weekdays, accommodating people who work in Boulder. Once in Boulder it’s easy to connect to many other locations, including Denver, DIA, Longmont and other Boulder areas, on RTD buses. If service from Lyons doesn’t accommodate your needs, you can conveniently park at any park n’ ride in Boulder or Longmont and travel from there.
We have applied for a grant to increase our RTD service in Lyons. If we get this grant, increased service hours would start in January, 2012 and include weekday mid-day service, a 14-hour service to and from Boulder on Saturdays, and a directional weekday commuter route connecting throughout Longmont. The grant would also extend the community-wide Eco Pass through 2014. Although this funding would be helpful, not getting it should not hinder the development of the ECO pass program. Don’t wait until expanded service is offered. By increasing our ridership more opportunities will present themselves.
Bus schedules and trip planners are easily found online to help plan your alternative commuter trips. You can access current bus schedules and routes on the RTD website (rtd-denver.com). For more complicated routes, Google Maps is also a great resource (maps.google.com). This website allows you to plan your trips by bus, walking, biking or a combination of them all.
Riding the bus is a mindset. Many of us are so used to having everything at our convenience and within our control that it’s hard to step outside our comfort zone, take that leap of faith, and simply get on the bus. The first few times anyone rides the bus can be a little scary, but with practice, many people find it more convenient than driving.
The Sustainable Future Commission is hosting a class that will help first time riders feel more comfortable taking the bus. This class will be January 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Walt Self Senior Center. Hope to see you there.
