In the race for U.S. Senator from Colorado, the Democrat incumbent Michael Bennett holds a razor slim lead; it is essentially a dead heat with his Republican challenger Ken Buck. Both garnered 47% of the vote, and are separated by only a few thousand votes. This one will surely go to a recount, and probably won’t be official until some time after the challenge, which will inevitably come. U.S. House of Representatives District 2, went to the Democratic incumbent Jared Polis who defeated Republican challenger Stephen Bailey. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper (Democrat) defeated two challengers, Tom Tancredo (Constitution Party) and Dan Maes (Republican), for the position of Colorado’s next Governor.
Closer to home, the race for District 16 Colorado State Senator Republican Tim Leonard, and Democratic Jeanne Nicholson are also in a virtual tie.
Leonard holds the lead by a few hundred votes, and this one will also most likely go to a recount.
Democratic incumbent Claire Levy won re-election over her opponent, Robert Houdeshell for a seat in the Colorado State House of Representatives.
No surprises in Boulder County: Cindy DeMenico secured another term as County Commissioner. Likewise Hillary Hall (Clerk-Recorder), Robert Hullinghorst (Treasurer), and Jerry Roberts (Assessor), Democrats one and all.
Congratulations to Lyons native Emma Hall, she won the race for Boulder County Coroner as an unaffiliated candidate.
As far as the statewide ballot initiatives went, they all were voted down, except the one that concerned the relocation of state government in the event of an emergency. A big sigh of relief went out all over the state when the so-called “bad three,” amendments 60, 61, and prop 101, went down in flames. Of the Boulder County ballot measures, the Human Service Tax passed, and the Open Space Tax is too close to call; as of Wednesday morning, the no’s outnumbered the yes’s by a little over 800 votes.
The Lyons Fire District initiative passed easily.
