Dear Lyons Voters,
The Lyons Economic Development Commission endorses Ballot Issue 3-A, the Mill Override measure for the St. Vrain Valley School District.
EDC Commissioners don’t stand alone on this issue. We have joined a large group. Mayors of every town in the school district support this measure. So do a substantial number of business organizations, economic stakeholders, and community leaders throughout the school district.
It is unusual for people and organizations like the above to endorse a tax increase. But this is not a typical tax increase. It is a wise investment rather than an unnecessary expense.
Realtors tell us that school quality is a deciding factor for many or most families. Consequently, fine schools enhance property values and poor ones erode those values. We believe Lyons’ reputation for great schools attracts and retains neighbors who share the community’s commitment to children and to education. From an economic viewpoint, we believe our schools make the Lyons community more attractive to new companies, new employees, and new investors, all of which are cornerstones of prosperity.
The school district has faced declining state funding, $20 million in the last three years. We can let the quality of this asset be compromised, or we can step up and support the mill levy override, accept individual responsibility for investing a bit more of our personal resources, and thereby partially close the gap in state funding.
Since fine schools are a community asset that enhances economic prosperity, properly financing them is investing in our community. Therefore, the Economic Development Commission endorses Ballot Issue 3-A.
