Dear Editor,
The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County applauds the great strides St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) has made in recent years to work on closing the achievement gap between kids from low-income families and their peers. The

District’s leadership has spent its scarce resources wisely by adding more preschool and Kindergarten slots at low-income schools and extending instruction time for at-risk students. These investments are especially remarkable, considering the $20 million in state funding cuts the District has managed to absorb over the past three years. Now is the time to defend this forward progress, by voting for Proposition 103, the statewide school funding measure.

If Prop 103 passes, SVVSD will receive $14 million more in state funding next year than it did this year. If the measure fails, it will mean another $8 million in budget cuts for St. Vrain. If Prop 103 fails, the St. Vrain Valley School Board will have to ask these types of questions:
“How much should we increase class size?”
“Should we ask teachers for another year of a pay freeze?”
“Should we ask teachers to pay more of the costs of their benefits (effectively asking them to take a pay cut)?”
“Should we eliminate some programs? If we do, will families open enroll to other districts and private schools, costing us more revenue?”
“Should we charge families more fees?”
“How do we keep the achievement gap from widening?”

Don’t let St. Vrain’s hard-fought gains for vulnerable students slip out of our grasp! Please joining the Trustees of The Community Foundation by supporting Proposition 103 and vote “Yes.”
