Nuclear plants are basically a (dangerous) way to create steam (which in turn provides electricity). There are better ways, and if these two “better ways” (plants) broke down, the most dangerous thing that would happen is that it (the plant) would be ruined, and have to be rebuilt.
(1) Geo thermal energy: natural heat is underneath your feet in abundance.
And some plants are already safely located along the fault lines and hot springs.
Even small geothermal heat pumps are heating homes and pools worldwide.
(2) Thousands of tons of push-pull energy per hour -- on a constant fixed time line (the tides) are available on our coast lines... and most of the biggest cities are off oceans.
Even back in the Middle Ages and the Romans used it for mills. Tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar power.
The funds that would create one nuclear power plant could fund enough research to make electricity in safer, cheaper, more convenient ways, ...and with almost no environmental impact. Major plants were constructed in 1960 and it’s considered expensive to build for the amount of energy derived from it, but today, with oil at more than $100 a barrel, and depletion in our sights, the “geo” and “water” plants need to be developed.
The Japan nuclear disaster is a danger-flag, telling us to stop and change direction. And, what about all the radioactive waste being stored? And, we talk about getting away from the “earth killing” coal and gas/oil ...these are the CLEAN SAFE LIMITLESS SOLUTIONS.
Now, that you are informed....When you hear people speak about this, say something positive. If you want to be a pioneer supporter, write your legislators and power companies. The more voices heard, the faster the process will begin.
