Two young Lyons’ entrepreneurs, Sean Flynn and Zach Tucker, have a “sound” idea, and have started a new business, “Red Wolf Sound,” during their spare time. Flynn is a sophomore at Lyons Middle/Senior High School and Tucker is a freshman. The young men became friends about three years ago through their mutual interest in bluegrass music and the mandolin. By hanging around Planet Bluegrass during festivals, they both managed to snag part-time summer employment mowing the grass (is there is pre-teen boy alive who wouldn’t jump at the chance to get paid to drive a small tractor?) and doing odd jobs that involved landscaping.
Soon enough the lads started pestering Planet Bluegrass soundman Ed Keen to let them help him set up for concerts, i.e., lay out wires, set up speakers and mics, etc. Finally after asking a multitude of questions, and watching long enough, they both learned their way around a soundboard, and before long, both young men were fixtures in the sound booth at most Wildflower Pavilion and Planet Bluegrass events.
After a few years of saving their wages, they started investing in their own sound equipment: a sound board, speakers, cables, microphones, stands, and viola … Red Wolf Sound was born. The name of the company came about because of the red rocks that surround Lyons, and a fascination with wolves. Flynn’s mom chipped in with some graphic artwork for their logo, and earlier this month, the young men handled the sound for the Lyons Community Foundation social at the Oskar Blues Barn, which featured the music of local band Off The Tracks.
When they are not attending school, working at Planet Bluegrass, or their own gigs, Flynn runs track and field and cross country, while Tucker is a member of the basketball team. Both have maintained an interest in music, the former plays the tuba in the school band, while the latter plays percussion. Flynn says their rates are extremely reasonable (they might even work for nothing to get some experience under their belts), so if anyone in the community needs the help of some talented up and coming sound technicians at a local event, Red Wolf Sound can be contacted at (303) 823-9110 or (303) 823-5693, ask for Sean or Zach.
