“Our primary goal is to reduce traffic congestion on U.S. 36 and the Diagonal Highway,” said Audrey DeBarros, 36 Commuting Solutions Executive Director. “Cash is a big motivator for people, especially as gas prices are continuing to climb.”
The 36 Commuter CASH program is jointly funded by 36 Commuting Solutions and a federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant. To be eligible, participants must use U.S. 36 or the Diagonal Highway between Boulder and Longmont for part of their drive to work and have driven solo for at least the last 30 days.
The Refer-a-Friend Rewards program is open to commuters who currently bike, walk, ride transit, carpool, vanpool or telework, and is also open to past 36 Commuter CASH participants. The program is intended to reward current clean-commuters when they refer solo-commuters to the 36 Commuter CASH program.
The program so far has accrued significant environmental and cost saving benefits:
- 485 participants
- Over 13,800 vehicle trips reduced
- Over 285,000 Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) reduced, equaling approximately 115 trips from New York City to Los Angeles and eleven trips around the earth’s equator
- 280,000 lbs. of carbon emissions eliminated
- $67,000 saved in fuel and maintenance cost savings
“36 Commuter CASH is a turnkey way to inspire long-term commute choice change,” said DeBarros. “Follow-up surveys show 80% of program participants continue to use a commute option six months after their incentive period has ended. While the U.S. 36 Coalition seeks funding to reconstruct the U.S. 36 corridor and provide viable travel choices, 36 Commuter CASH is a cost effective strategy to reduce existing traffic congestion and improve our air quality,” she added.
“The Refer-a-Friend Reward program is a new way to motivate commuters who are already taking transit, carpooling, biking, and teleworking to encourage their friends and co-workers to try a new commute,” said Lori Frasier, Senior Vice President of Strategic Services for Key Equipment Finance in Superior. “Current clean commuters are the best recruiters – they understand the challenges, and the benefits, of switching to a clean commute.”
