When Can You Really Retire?

By Doug Carey

This past week some comments by AIG CEO Robert Benmosche went viral as he said he expects the average retirement age to jump to age 80. This just added fuel to the fire of fear that many in their 50s and 60s already have. A case in point: more than half of all baby boomers fear running out of money in retirement more than they fear death. This is according to a study from Allianz Life. Yet nearly 36% of these same people do not know how long their funds will last once they do retire.

About Town with LaVern Johnson, June 14, 2012

Another week gone by, and a hot and windy one.  We are fortunate not to have a wildfire.  Keep your fingers crossed, watch your cigarettes, your vehicle backfiring, etc. The conditions are bad!
This Sunday, June 17, is Father’s Day; a time to remember your father, the one that provided the money for your subsistence, whether he worked early or late, night or day, no doubt your father or grandfather

Another week gone by, and a hot one!  The fires are still burning, around 189 homes lost above the Ft. Collins area. A lot of square dancing friends have had to deal with this crisis. They belong to the Ponderosa Promenaders Club and dance at the Livermore Community Hall.  Many live in that fire area! Most have been evacuated. It is sad.

Ask the Handy Woman! with Kheli Mason

True or False: A house is only as good as its foundation?

In a general sense a general sense, true. But a foundation is only the start. I would suggest that just as important as a good foundation is a good roof. The best foundation in the world won’t do you a bit of good without a roof to protect the overall structure of the building, and in some cases, the foundation itself.

Fireworks Or Not, Celebrate The 4th Of July

Over many years my husband and I have celebrated our country’s birthday standing on the same corner of his small northern Minnesota hometown. Friends and family travel from all parts of the country and congregate on Main Street. They cheer the fire trucks and huge taconite tractors. They watch the children scramble for candy, keep time to patriotic music

About Town with LaVern Johnson, June 7, 2012

What a great weekend. Nice weather and lots of customers downtown.  Everyone enjoyed the extra crowds along Main Street. Thanks to the LAHC, artists, vendors, Studio Tour, MinTze Wu’s concerts, those who went on the Art Walk, the reception, etc.  A special day for Lyons, which really put us on the map!  The Lyons Redstone
