About Town with LaVern Johnson, March 15, 2012

A great week of good weather gone by, nice and warm, no snow or wind. Enjoy it while you can. They say more snow is on the way.  I remember when we had three feet of wet snow in early May, so we have a while to wait.

Roads Traveled With Linda L. Osmundson

Finding Fossils Close to Home

I moved to Colorado from Texas right out of college when I was hired to teach in Jefferson County. I stood awestruck at the sight of Red Rocks Amphitheater from the playground of Bear Creek Elementary. Amazed, I listened to my second graders talk about collecting arrowheads at nearby Soda Lakes. Our favorite unit included dinosaurs and a field trip to the Natural History Museum in Denver. That was a long time ago.

Glue 101: It’s A Sticky Situation (How Tacky)

So, your old wooden dining room chair finally came apart after being loose and wiggly when anyone sat on it (for the last two years!).  Hopefully no one hit the floor when it broke. You go to the big box home center to buy some glue to repair the chair and are confronted by six shelves full of so many different types of adhesives that your head starts to spin. All you want to do is put your chair back together, but what product would be the best for that task?

Ready to Hunt Colorado

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife 2012 Big Game Hunting brochure is now available and limited license applications are being accepted for this fall's big-game hunts. License applications for deer, elk, pronghorn, moose, sheep, goat and bear are due Tuesday, April 3.

For 2012, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has updated the interactive online version of the big game brochure that features videos with online application tips and hunting tips to use in the field. New tables in the brochure also help hunters easily identify units where licenses are valid and whether a hunter can hold more than one license at a time.

About Town with LaVern Johnson, March 8, 2012

Another week gone by, and not too bad. Windy, but it actually warmed up a little. Spring is right around the corner. This Sunday morning (or late Saturday night), turn your clocks ahead one hour.  It will be nice to have longer days.

About Town with LaVern Johnson, March 1, 2012

Another week gone by, cold and windy, but I see some crocuses (or are they croqui?) blooming, so spring is near.

SUCH A WIND!
93 miles per hour here in Lyons. Worse than Boulder, which is unusual.

Thanks to the Lyons firemen, who contained that fire in Stone Canyon so fast.  They really did wonders, as hard as the wind was blowing. That was truly a scary situation.  There doesn’t seem to be any answer as to the wildfires. We want rain and snow, which  makes the grass grow, which then dries up in the hot summer months, creating a lot of dry grass to burn!  Be sure to watch that you don’t start a fire by putting hot ashes out, or sparks from a vehicle or mower, etc. Take care!
