Mardi Gras In New Orleans

Mardi Gras In New Orleans

Roads Traveled with Linda L. Osmundson

When we disembarked from the American Queen in New Orleans at the end of our Mississippi cruise, little did we know we were stepping into the beginning of Carnival. Not a carnival with Ferris wheels and rollercoasters, but the city’s season of fun, food, frivolity, parades, and masked balls before the somber days of abstinence during Lent.

A Step Back In Time

Roads Traveled with Linda L. Osmundson

Over New Years we sailed down the Mississippi from Memphis to New Orleans on the American Queen. Boarding the paddlewheel steamboat was like stepping onto a larger version of the Cotton Blossom of “Show Boat” movie fame. Everywhere I looked, I saw southern Victorian items; furnishings, china, hats, gloves, dolls, wallpaper, and portraits. Specialty rooms called “The Ladies’ Parlor” and “The Men’s Card Room” provided quiet reading alcoves or

Planet Bluegrass To Host 8th Annual Cane Conclave

Organizers have once again secured the beautiful Planet Bluegrass Ranch as the venue to host the 8th Annual Colorado Cane Conclave on Sunday, August 4, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Conclave is a fun-filled gathering of anglers who build, collect, fish, and enjoy fine bamboo rods and other vintage tackle. It is also an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to try “casting cane” but has not yet had the opportunity, to take advantage of the ranch’s half-mile

Sailing Through The Past

By the time this article makes the paper, my husband and I will be enjoying the last day of our cruise down the Mississippi (provided there is enough water) aboard the American Queen steamboat. The government maritime agency, which originally built the vessel, repossessed it and let it sit in Beaumont, Texas, for three years. Its sister ship, the

Christmas Keepsakes From Around The World

Frequent travelers often collect keepsakes from their destinations: Christmas ornaments, postcards, and other items. Once friends learn of the traveler’s passion, they tend to add to the collection. Grace and Carl Hittle in Fort Collins have traveled all over the world and collected nativity sets.

Crested Butte: A Road Traveled

For several years, our son begged us to visit Crested Butte where he owns a house he rents when he or his business partner don’t want to use it themselves. A little out of the way and about 255 miles from Lyons, the trip is well worth the effort.

Nearby Educational Exhibits Worth Seeing

Exclusive to Denver, the “Becoming Van Gogh” exhibit at the Denver Art Museum includes seventy works by Van Gogh, which return to original owners after the January 20, 2013 closing. Another twenty works by artists who inspired Van Gogh’s ten-year art career, sit beside his work and show his progression from figure drawings to oil landscapes, among other things.

Travel Troubles

Our recent experience on the way to my husband’s high school reunion in Minnesota reminded me of all the travel troubles we’ve encountered over the years. Perhaps you’ve lived a few travel nightmares. Here are just a few of ours.
