For several years, our son begged us to visit Crested Butte where he owns a house he rents when he or his business partner don’t want to use it themselves. A little out of the way and about 255 miles from Lyons, the trip is well worth the effort.

Nearby Educational Exhibits Worth Seeing

Exclusive to Denver, the “Becoming Van Gogh” exhibit at the Denver Art Museum includes seventy works by Van Gogh, which return to original owners after the January 20, 2013 closing. Another twenty works by artists who inspired Van Gogh’s ten-year art career, sit beside his work and show his progression from figure drawings to oil landscapes, among other things.

Bird Watching At Its Best

Are you a bird watcher? Have you pulled out the binoculars to see an owl in a tree, or the blue heron by the creek? Do you listen to bird songs every morning and watch them in your feeders? Consider a daytrip to Loveland’s Museum/Gallery. The current juried exhibit, Birds in Art (now through October 28), highlights various artists, mediums, birds, and works produced in 2011 from all over the world. Entrance to the Main Gallery exhibit is $5 for ages six and up. Free days include Thursday, September 6; Sunday, October 14; and Saturday, October 27.

Lantern-Lit Journey Through History

Each young camper held a lantern from the early 1900s and followed their guide through the mysteries of the Lyons Redstone Museum on the first day of the 2012 Lyons History Summer Day Camp. They first learned about how fire, then candles, lanterns, and finally electric lights changed the way of life of mankind. Then they went down the darkened hallways to discover how Lyons pioneer families lived their daily lives.

Highway Of Legends

About 205 miles from Lyons, or a three and a half hour drive, you’ll find one of the first scenic highways of Colorado, the Highway of Legends. While on the way to Santa Fe, my husband and I passed many signs, which directed travelers to this eighty-two mile, two hour scenic side trip that begins in Walsenburg and ends in Trinidad. You take Rte. 160, west toward LaVeta where the Highway of Legends actually begins at Rte. 12.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Drive south on I-25 about seven hours from Lyons and you arrive in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “A City Different,” “Aspen’s sister,” “O’Keeffe Country,” the highest US capitol city at over 7200 feet, and Spanish for “holy faith.”  Thirty-two years ago my husband and I visited the city for a company business conference. More recently, we traveled there to help our middle son and his family settle into a house. Santa Fe has definitely changed!
