He was always willing to add his artistic talents to GAP art projects, including in 2003, his work on the Lyons mural at the Visitors’ Center. The golden eagle, the small birds throughout the mural, plus the two bears were from his paintbrush. At one time, there was a “face” with binoculars mounted on a tree on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Main, which simply read, “D.W.” For several years, D.W. was a regular contributor of articles about birds for the Old Lyons Recorder.
D. W. attended the Lyons Golden Gang functions, and enjoyed his meals and the camaraderie of the group. He attended the senior lunch at Oskar Blues just last Wednesday. A memorial service was held Tuesday for him by the Golden Gang at Walt Self Senior Center. Tributes by Don and Mary Hunt, Kathleen Spring, and Ruth Major were read, and also by: Cathy Rivers, Janet Freeman, LaVern Johnson, Maxine Harkalis, and Marilou Wallace – Director of the Center. Several songs: Souvenirs, We Will Meet Again, Voice of an Angel, and Heaven’s Bright Shore were sung by Vance French. We will miss D. W. He is survived by a daughter and granddaughter in Texas, who were unable to attend the memorial.
